I am going to start out by saying that if you are not an American history buff or a person that lives and dies by Iced Earth then this DVD is not for you. It is very, very, very surprising that Jon Schaffer got the label to even stand behind this release. While watching this behemoth I felt like I was back in ‘American History’ class being forced to watch some old war movie. I had the deep urge to covertly cover my face so I could grab a few Z’s in the darkness. BORING.

This is essentially an educational piece, and if looked at that way, and used in that type of setting it will work to bring more awareness to the bloody battle at Gettysburg, where in just 3 days over 13,000 men from our country fought and died alone on the battlefield. There were brothers, best friends, fathers and sons fighting against each other in their own backyards. Ha-I learned that from the video.

Mr. Schaffer’s passion for history could be also called an obsession. He owns and operates the Spirit of ’76 military miniatures store and makes no bones about his love and knowledge of the subject. But is there really a need for him to share it with us? Don’t bother “buzzing in”, the answer is NO.

So what the hell do we have on this DVD then? Disc One is the song “Gettysburg” set to video. But it is not like the videos you see “on the MTV”, which is one of its downfalls. I am guessing that Schaffer just didn’t have the budget to do this with real people in real time so it is basically the audio track played along with computer generated flames, maps, flags, and portraits of soldiers, for over 30 nauseating minutes, UGH! For me it was very hard to sit through the whole thing and at about 17 minutes in I hit the FF button. I think I saw some real human life once, but only for a millisecond. Next is a real time tour of the Gettysburg battlefield by Jon and some fellow who is a “Battlefield Expert”. The expert does a much better job of explaining things than Jon does but this turns out to be another FF moment. Then there is a segment on the Spirit of ’76 store, uh oh I feel myself having the urge to vomit. Can you say fast forward? The ego on this guy is absolutely amazing. I mean he comes across mellow and is just sharing his hobby with us but I say, who really gives a shit? Not many and that is what surprises me about SPV actually releasing this monster.

Disc 2 is a little less painful, but not much. It includes the videos for “The Reckoning” and “When the Eagle Flies.” Which are hot new things that no one has ever seen before-NOT. And then as if we haven’t had enough Jon Schaffer already there is “The Jon Schaffer Interview”. WOW, can you say “EGO”.

I’m gonna come right at ya with my next sentence…I hated this DVD and would never watch it again. I am an Iced Earth fan. I was crazy for this band up until the Horror Show release and while I still listened during and after that time I just didn’t care as much.

As I said in the beginning, if you are into history, this is a winner. If you really, really like Iced Earth, this is also a winner. If you love American history-AND- Iced Earth, you 4 people out there have a reason to live. For the rest of us my message is AVOID at all costs. How do you spell relief? E-J-E-C-T.

I'll admit I didn't pay much attention when this was first released (as a result of reading this & other biased reviews), but after listening to the Gettysburg tune I figured what the hell. Regarding the music video, it consists of a series of repetitive images (i.e. flashing images of gettysburg army commanders, flags waving, backdrops of the actual battlefield, and some computer generated explosions), which, I'll admit, is definitely not the strong point of this dvd. The battlefield tour portion, however, is worth the price of purchase alone. If you are into history, I would recommend picking this up. Jon Schaffer also explains the lyrics of the song as they relate to the battle, pretty interesting. It's clear to me now that not everyone will like this.

Ok. First of all, if you're going to review something, just leave it at that. Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one but no one wants to hear it. Second of all, what on earth is wrong with someone combining music and history? A form of publicity? Iced Earth? Does anyone even know who Iced Earth are besides their fans and the few loud mouth obnoxious pieces of shit who state an opinion about Matt Barlow leaving and Iced Earth not being good anymore etc. Last time I watched t.v, Iced Earth wasnt on heavy rotation anywhere. Anyways. Good DVD for people who like Iced Earth and their gettysburg history.

Shut up and listen to what htis DVD has to say. I bet you might learn something. Instead of watching TRL and the latest crap that MTV puts out, why don't you sit down, pop some popcorn, and enjoy this work of art. This reviewer has no respect for the artistic genious Jon Schaffer is. Obviously he listens to the mindless EMO junk that's poured out every ten seconds. Iced Earth Fan: Buy it Civil War Buff: If you are a metal fanatic then you'll enjoy it. Other than that, I don't recomend this as an educational video. If You Like MTV: Go F*** yourself.

The words "I'm one of the greatest Kiss fans in the world" immeadiately eliminates your credibility in my book. As for Iced Earth, I just have no interest in them without Matt Barlow. Plus it doesn't help that the "The Ripper" was schlocking nu-metal in a local cover band called "the Sickness" before IE threw him a bone.

Musicians are people too with other likes as well. History is a very important part of our lives and gives us a foundation from which we are an acting society of today. I think that his mixture of his two passions, music and history, is a great piece. I don't know why you have to bother arguing about ap scores and such, being this is a music website. Furthermore, rock has it's own history and a great one at that. This band has a great history with great music, and if you are not going to be a fan for following the band to the end then you're not really a fan. I mean I'm one of the greatest Kiss fans in the world, and they had some down points (i.e. the elder) but Nevertheless I still looked passed any narrow mindedness to foolow them through greater peices they created afterwords. Thanks, anmlpunk

Okay, thanks for the review - a bit bitter, but I think it illustrates what the viewer will get. Now that many music DVDs are coming out ... we can all use reviews to help us choose.

MY CAPS LOCK KEY IS BROKEN TOO!!1! Wait nevermind, I'm not a douche bag. And although I have no interest in this DVD since I've seen all the videos and know enough about the Civil War to be content for the rest of my life,I will continue buying Iced Earth albums until they disband. Yeah, and I'm sure you spent the entire show pointing and laughing at Jon (way to add that beer part, you're cool). You have nothing better to do with your time? Bum? You're just sad knowing he's better than you and that nobody will remember your name. Fuck off.

"i got a 3 on my American History AP exam and im not even american." The thing is so easy anyway. I got a high 4 on the practice exam without studying. But I am an American, so kudos to you. If any of you ever had to sit through the little ancient light map show that they have at the actual Gettysburg, you'd be glad to watch this DVD. And I like history. BTW, who let that retard in? Leave the caps lock off, dumbass.

-COULDNT AGREE MORE EMINOR -THAT GLASS JOE COMMENT WAS CLASSIC -ITS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT JON IS ACTUALLY DEAD SERIOUS WITH HIS ACT. CIVIL WAR REINACTOR SERIOUS. IM SURPRISED THIS FUCKER HASNT TRIED TO GROW THE DEAD PREZ BEARD YET. I SAW THEM IN CONCERT ALL DECKED OUT IN CIVIL WAR UNIFORMS, THE VENUE WAS EXTREMLY SMALL SO I GOT THE CHANCE TO POINT AND LAUGH IN HIS FACE WHILE DRINKING A BEER TO HELP ME SWALLOW ALL THAT CHEESE. I SAW NO SHAME IN HIS EYES DESPITE GETTING MOCKED IN THE MOST BLATANT WAY. IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE HE COULDNT EVEN MAKE EYE CONTACT, BUT STILL NO SHAME. MY RANT IS GETTING MORE PATHETIC THAN JONS CAREER SO ILL STOP

If I want to learn about the Civil War, I'd use one of the countless other qualified and well produced sources. I don't want my history lessons from metal musicians any more than I want politcal advice from Eddie Vedder and Susan Sarandon.

You ask 'Why do we need / want this'? Personal taste, I guess. I wish more bands did things like this. For example, many bands have done stories of Vlad Tepes (the Impaler, the inspiration for Dracula). If one of those bands did a DVD detailing the actual history of the story, I'd buy the thing in a second. It just depends on what you're interested in. I'm a huge Civil War buff, this thing is cool.

You say it's not as good as it could have been. How could it have been better (other then by showing the band, which Jon did not want to do). Sure, a 'Lord of the Rings' style battle sequence would be nice, but who has 30 million for a metal DVD? Using actors to play the roles was certainly a possibility, but even the 25 million film 'Gettysburg' was ridiculed by many historians because of the actors.

yes they do illustrate what is going on in the song, but it is still B O R I N G, and not as good as it could have been, and as far as the mix, since i never planned on watching/listening to this again, no matter how good the sound, it really doesnt matter uh oh, i feel that acid like feeling in the back of my throat again, blarb, {puking noises}

For those with an interest in Gettysburg, you'll definetly get something out of this. The visuals are far from random Civil War stuff, they illustrate whats going on in the song. There is no mention of the surround mix in this review. Thats one of the best parts of the DVD!

there is no music to be had, besides the 2 videos which we have already seen, and then the 30 epic GBG which as i said is set over repetitive, boring visuals, i mean after the first 5 minutes you get it, and it just keeps going and going, and the rest is pure schaffer blah, blah, blah, this is not a music video, it is a trip into schaffer's historical interests and a plug for the store, and more boring chatter with ego man it sucks, i only gave it a 2 for the effort, and it did take some time to produce it is an educational video, if taken in that form, it is not bad

I am a HUGE history buff but Jon Schaeffer is one of the biggest jerks in metal. This is a combination egofest and infomercial for his store. Many better American power metal bands than Iced Earth these days.

When I read Schaeffer's description of this DVD, I thought I was overlooking the part where he mentioned the music... I guess I didn't. I was really hoping for a live concert DVD of Iced Earth with their new singer. It was a great concert and deserved to be chronicled. I might download this off of UseNet, but I'm not very excited about it now.
