If you could only fathom how floored I was when I learned that members of Rhapsody and Ensiferum had joined forces with the one and only Yngwie J. Malmsteen, to bring forth the super group of all metal super groups. Later, it was brought to my attention that Children Of Bodom's very own Alexi Laiho had closed the books on his highly acclaimed band to hook up with none other than Finntroll. Such events will undoubtedly house some of the most spine-tingling music ever to be put on tape. Okay, so you caught me! Both of the previous statements were indeed falsified, but I meant well. At least now you have a pretty accurate understanding of what lies ahead when you listen to Wintersun's bewildering eight track debut album.

The self-titled disc is an unprecedented neo-folk shredfest from former Ensiferum main man, Jari Mäenpää. Revealing just how adept he is, Jari wrote, recorded, and produced the entire record with no more assistance than a session drummer (courtesy of Rotten Sound's Kai Hahto) and his own staggering talents. He sings, screams, plays guitar and keys; Who knew the man was capable of so much? Certainly not this kid. I would have to reluctantly presume this is what initially led to his departure from Ensiferum. He clearly needed to focus his efforts on a band that would allow him to fully showcase his potential and ability.

There really isn't a whole lot about Wintersun that my doctored description doesn't already convey. Just take my word for it when I tell you that this is one of the most breathtaking debut offerings to grace the scene in a very long time. Between the headlines over at Nuclear Blast reading 'The powerful and majestic rebirth of former Ensiferum vocalist, Jari Mäenpää!' and Norther vocalist Petri Lindroos joining Ensiferum to fill Jari's shoes as the momentary front man, this should garner up some much deserved attention for all three bands.

This website has come a long way since 2004 (see review). Unfortunately, Wintersun has not.

Well just checking back with this band since he put on such a memorable debut. I have since then played the living sh*t out of Wintersun. The new album definately lives up to its name so far....Time I am getting impatient! I will wait as long as it takes, because I know Jari only focuses on putting out a quality album. Wintersun is just too good to forget.

What the fuck do these Finnish people eat for Breakfast??? Totally agree with Chris. "Battle Against Time" is a fucking insane song! I just purchased the special edition with the dvd containing a live show. Jari may not be a good showman, but fuck, he can play and sing like the best of 'em. To play the riffs that are on this album and sing is just unbelievable.

Yeah, Jair wrote most of the Ensiferum material. However, I definately think that the majority of his inspiration was devoted to Wintersun rather than Ensiferum in 2004, and as a result Wintersun was amazing, while Ensiferum's 2004 album Iron was slightly lacking. I think Ensiferum will really suffer without him at the helm, but I'm still looking forward to Victory Songs later this month.

i think jari wrote a majority of the ensiferum stuff so i think thats why it still has a bit of the ensiferum sound to it

Some of the songs on here sound exactly like Ensiferum, so one has to wonder: how much of the Ensiferum "sound" has left with Jari? It doesn't bode well for Enisferum's new album.

To Leon, You don't automatically become popular if you play good music. If you haven't noticed those bands that are popular have signed a record deal with one of the bigger record labels. Big labels have enough money to promote their bands. They have a huge control over media. Thats why those bands become popular and "great". What i am happy about is that now this new internet era is slowly starting to change this. Now even unknown bands can promote themselves through the internet. Words travel faster. This is a good thing for the bands and for the fans as well. Big labels are trying to control this also, but they will hopefully fail. About wintersun, they kick ass!

Brilliant band. I consider this to be rather groundbreaking, but it sucks that we have to wait until late next summer to hear the new album. I hope i'm still alive by then...

This album stands as one of the best metal albums, of any genre, in a long time. Every song has its own distinct feel and atmosphere, just like any classic album should. Everything just sounds so damn creative and expertly played...one of my top five favorite albums ever. "Battle Against Time" is such an incredible song, its not even funny.

Leon your an idiot Its understandable that any band with more than four to five riffs per song would go straight over your head. Popularity DOES NOT define greatness, that is the essence of mainstream fuckshit bands that in thier entire careers could not amass the majesty and iconic brilliance of a single Wintersun song I first heard them on the monsters of metal nuclear blast DVD I ordered it post haste, it stands alone as the greatest melodic death metal album i have ever heard.

Man are you deaf!, Wintersun is so melodic and majestic, this is the BEST METAL ALBUM EVER. All songs on this album are Masterpiece and it should be rated 7/7/7! Can't wait for their second album.

I was recomended this album/band from a friend, who said that if i could find it I should definatly pick it up (it is impossibly hard to find records from "obscure"(AKA about 85% of bands from outside North america) metal bands where I live) and one day while I was shuffiling through the Metal CDs at my local Record store, to my surprise, I found this. since I had a pocket full of recently made cash I felt I had to buy something, so not finding anything else that I was interested in, I grabbed this one. I had not heard any songs from the record, and I hadn't listened to Ensiferum or Norther(although I did hear good things). To say the least I was completely floored by just how good this album is! Wintersun is in no way a rip-off of Ensiferum, or any other band for that matter. Jari Mäenpää has made a very unique melodic death/(or whatever you genre Gurus out there want to call it) power/folk blend here. to go off the topic of music for a second, I also really liked the artwork on the cover and in the booklet, it has a very cool frost-like effect on the pages where the lyrics are. this is a 6/5/6 for me.

Hands down, one of the best albums released last year. "Winter Madness" is one of the most rousing choruses I'll ever hear, I think. First time I ever heard Mäenpää shriek "WINTER!" after the slow melodic part, I was filled with the burning desire to sail a longboat to Greenland.
