Album Review

I don’t think it is possible to overstate how pivotal 2003 was for Lamb of God. As the Palaces Burn was an unequivocal success, and deservedly so. It was 38 minutes of all out headbanging ferocity built on an updated take on classic thrash, Swedish influences, and some major groove. However, they unleashed this monster at a time when MTV was looking to recreate (read: re-cash in) a focus on metal. As the culture makers were launching the new and somewhat improved Headbangers Ball, they were looking for young, loud, and (whether or not they’d admit it) American talent, to hold up as bastions of the modern metal scene. Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, and to a lesser degree, Mastodon fit the bill perfectly, and were featured weekly on the show, along with the network’s other unfortunate focus, metalcore of the eye liner and girl jean variety. And of course, there is not just Headbangers Ball “the show”; there is “the tour”, “the albums”, and the list will probably go on and on. Fortunately, these three bands were supporting stellar albums and deserved this exposure, unlike many of the other bands that spring boarded into the mainstream. With all this success and attention, there has been much speculation about how these three bands will follow up their success. And all will be made clear soon, as each of these bands is releasing a new album in the next month. Having heard all three, I’d say that Mastodon made a better album, and Shadows Fall a slightly weaker one. And Lamb of God? Well, they made more or less the same album—and I’m not complaining one fucking bit.

On Ashes of the Wake, Lamb of God have picked up exactly where they left off and have served up a second course of first class metal. It’s all back—the neck breaking riffs, crunching thrash, and monster grooves. Also back is Randy Blythe’s deeper, growling bark that was a welcome evolution from the higher pitched shriek of the New American Gospel days. And although he does still use that approach from time to time, it now sounds much more controlled. Blythe also unleashes several of those major league, blow your hair back, peel your face screams. “Laid to Rest” is the first single and opens the album in style. A demo version of this track has been available for download for the last couple months, so I assume that most fans have heard this song. For me, the only question was whether the band would sustain this quality throughout the album, rather than run out of gas or start experimenting. No worries, Ashes of the Wake starts and finishes in fifth gear. In fact, it is difficult to even pick out the stand out tracks; the album is consistently good. “The Faded Line” is as good as any though, and it and “Hourglass” are early candidates for favorites. They each incorporate all the weapons in the Lamb of God arsenal and all have tight thrash-n-groove riffs that get the head bouncing and keep it bouncing.

One notable change on this album is the much improved production. This gives the songs a more robust sound and also makes the drums a bit more prominent. And hey, if you’ve got a drummer like Chris Adler, you play to your strengths. His playing accentuates the riffs perfectly. A million drummers play fast, the difference is in the details—what you add and vary, and more often than not Adler has the right answer.

I suppose some will criticize the band for not branching out enough from their last album. And there is some validity to that, but the band has developed such a distinct and successful balance of styles and between old and new that I just can’t complain about getting more of the same. It is not as fresh the second time around, but Ashes of the Wake still packs quite a punch.

Sorry for diverging from the bitchin between the 'critics' here - in regards to the review in question i can definitely understand where Matt is coming from on the acute differences between 'as the palaces burn & ashes of the wake' - but i think you have to agree that "ashes of the wake" is a lot more solid and listenable than its predecessor. Perhaps this could be the result of the production, but i think the riffage and drum beats are excercised with alot better execution, which all in all creates a more listenable, head banging experiance, and as such an impressive evolution from 'as the palaces burn".

ive always associated log with a technical branch of death metal, not thrash. i mean, i can see it, but to me thrash is stuff like megadeth, exodus, and testament. but it doesnt matter what genere u put it in, it kicks major ass. and i did enjoy randy's change to a more low, gutteral vocal.

LOG have followed up their previous masterpiece 'As the Palaces Burn' in style. Ashes of the Wake is an intense experience, they grind, they groove and they pack one hell of a punch. What I appreciate about this group is that they are all talented but never out do one another, in other words, they only ever compliment each other. I think everyone can agree on the following: Randy spits out more fire than a Red Dragon and i believe It must be from all those 'Chilli Cook Outs' he attends. The only difference between this album and ATPB is the production, it still has that raw LOG tone to it however its just a little more refined. Saying that this is not ATPB Part 2, Ashes stands on its two feet. Tracks like One Gun, Blood of the Scribe are vicious ear-drillers containing concise guitar riffing, and thorough bass and drum patterns. Tracks like Laid to Rest and Hourglass have such a tight groove to them its hard not to be reminded of Pantera. This is pure metal at its best. Buy this album now. Rating 5/6/5.5

Walk With Me in Hell was awesome, and I even thought Redneck was good and fun, and personally sounded like LoG. yes I hear the Pantera worship, but it's not like they gave up their own sound to make it. i hear the old LoG plain as day. And the stupid fuck that says This band has a hardcore influence, point it out. Name something about this band that has a hardcore influence. Cause if you can, you don't listen to much hardcore, or even metalcore. And just for the record, This is not metalcore. Acacia Strain, Unearth, The Agony Scene, All That Remains, KsE... Those are metalcore. This is not.

Prometheus what I was trieing to say is that its sad that it took atpb to get noticed. Though it is funny that when devin Townsend touches an album it blows up. Also what hardcore influance. Explain yourself on this one. Hardcore has picked up a serious metal influance these days not the other way around. Modern hardcore has pulled quite a bit from bay area thrash. And Id like to see them have Chris poland play on another tune this time aswell. Hell having alex skolnick would be sweet.

Hey, I was just on Lamb Of God's website, and there is another song off "sacrament" called "walk with me in hell" available for streaming. And its awsome. They haven't dropped the hardcore influence. There is nothing to worry about. "redneck" was just a Pantera tribute song. If you havent heard the new song yet, go to: http://www.lambofgod.tv

Prometheus | posted on 7/2006 | Reply
Yeah, enraged, its all very well saying that Lamb of God have been around a lot longer than 5 years, but it wasnt until New American Gospel, orprobably actually ATPB before LOG started getting decent publicity, and people started hearing them. You could apply your rationale to any band described as new in that case... But yeah i agree about the whole Pantera/Slayer thing. It's redundant. I don't know why people, not just the public but also the press and websites, insist on labelling bands as the "new _________". Metal is different these days. There are more bands, and more oppurtunities for bands to record and release material. I doubt that there will ever again be - or do we need - a truly universal, archetypal popular metal band such as Pantera/Metallica/Slayer. So stop trying to manufacture one with unneccesary hype

if redneck was indeed a stab at say A7X (its sounds nothing like an immitation of A7X for the record) why would you water it down, surely it'd make more sense to make the heaviest most brutal song you could as a "fuck you". I don't see how you mock a 'scene' or 'genre' by becoming part of it, even if it is only for one song.

I doubt LOG will dissapoint. I do laugh with the LOG is one of the best bands in the past 5 years. For many years LOG were one of Richmond Va's hidden gems. I cant tell you how many times Ive seen these dudes tearing Alley Katz, or the now defunct twisters apart over the years. So i was floored when it took atbp to get them to blow up. You cant lump these guys in with metalcore it doesnt work. They dont incorporate the metalcre elements. So get over it. Tyler so you name dropped pantera to give you credibility yeah that doesnt work. So many people jumped that bandwagon after the band eneded. And name dropping slayer basicly does the same thing. Slayer were good but not the be all end all that alot of people make them out to be. And honestly I think that reign in blood is overrated compared to south of heaven and Seasons which is the last slayer album I really enjoyed. Not to say that diabolus or god hates us all were bad just not into it as much. But l am interested to hear the new log.

@KellerWVU If what you say is true, then I am encouraged slightly. I'm not sure about the merits of taking "stabs" at other styles of music in your own, sounds a bit too much like Hip-hop to me, but if LOG haven't totally abandoned thrash metal that can onlty be a good thing. Because they are fucking good at it, remember...

Though no one will care I'll put my 2 cents in anyway. I like to look at Lamb Of God as the modern day natural progression from Pantera. They share a lot of qualities both underlying and superficial. I suppose my view of them in this way allows me to enjoy them much more. I think the southern thrasy riffing and constant double bass grooving (reminds me a lot of Pantera) found in "Redneck" is an awesome new sound and possible direction for Lamb Of God to take and will make for a suprising and possibly unique new album.

@Jon it should be noted that in my previous comment i wrote "going off the first single". im not saying that the whole album will necessarily be in the same vein as this track, but a bands first single is (generally) a pretty good representation of what that album will sound like. bands will usually chose a song they believe best encompasses the sound their latest offering provides. hence, my consequent judgement of “redneck”. however, sometimes [and im fucking hoping this is the case w/ new LOG] they'll chose to release a more "radio friendly" tune as a means of reaching a broader audience. im not saying that the upcoming album is guaranteed to be bad, but from what ive heard so far, the chances of this not being so is pretty grim. obiter dictum: if your comment was not directed solely at me [rather at the others who feel similar to i], then i apologise for this rant haha. thats just my 2 cents.

Nu-metal? I just now, today, found this review site and think it kicks ass and feel its reviews are honest and extremely thorough. However, I do feel that many of the people posting think they understand heavy metal and what it actually is when, in fact, they do not. Lamb of God is not "nu-metal" or "metal core" or "f4ggh3ylolz". Lamb of God's music pretty much defines not only modern heavy metal, but heavy metal of the last two decades. It takes influence from Slayer, Pantera and yes, even early Metallica, and just combines it into a new package that is fresh and precise as can be (a lot like Fear Factory, but better imo). I highly recommend checking Lamb of God out live, where music is as real as it gets, and enjoy it. They are quite amazing, in my opinion. However, I'd like to be completely frank for a moment and just say, stop shitting on good music and go get your mommy a cigarette, you fucking pre-pubescent trolls. Thanks for your time!

I picked this up today, with mastodons leviathan... and this album is just what I needed to drown out a van of screaming assholes. I like that the guitars and drums dont sound so thin this time. these motherfuckers must have given off a part of their souls because there is just an endless ammount of riff going on here... Its hard for me to pick out standout tracks, this is more like one big long ass song that pummels you into the ground and leaves your metal fingers sticking out of the earthen crater. Hourglass is pretty awesome, and there is a nice little melody running through laid to rest... break you and now youve got something to die for, and of course the instrunmental title track... I cant really decide if I like this or the mastodon better, but I defenitely like this alot more than their previous albums, the songs are given a little more room to breathe. I love this fucker! even though it is a little monotonous, you wont hear me complaining. give me this over fucking atreyu any day.

Coming from Ireland, I'm gonna have to wait a bit to get the new Lamb Of God album - but what I've heard so far - one song, Hourglass - is enough to make me froth at the mouth with anticipation. I still believe New American Gospel pisses over ATPB, not knocking the heaviness of ATPB but NAG is just more fierce.... razor sharp. Fucking great to hear that LOG are still churning out top notch heavy fucking metal/metalcore/whatevercore - hey, as long as it kills, you can call it fluffy bunnycore for all I care! So much more good stuff on the way... The Haunted -rEVOLVEr, Shadows Fall - The War Within, Caliban - The Opposite From Within, Mastodon - Leviathan, Meshuggah - I ... I can't wait.

Got this the other day, I'd say lamb of god have nailed it this time with both production and writing. Steve Austin and Devin Townsend are two of my HEROES in metal, but personally i think austin sucks as a producer and Devin has hit gold a few times but a lot of his production doesn't sound too good, ATPB included. The new album rules. They seem to be picking up a lot of exposure off this whole Headbangers ball family thing at the moment, but they, along with mastodon, Black Dahlia et al deserve the success, even if they do end up lumped in with poor bands like hatebreed, drowning pool etc

They got a little creative in a different way, I like the soloing, but the best thing that LOG has ever done is A warning, Blood Junkie, and Dimera(BTP) However, their cds havent really come out of my cd player since i herd of AOTW coming out. This bad is and will always be brutal, aggresive, and down right dirty.

If you had played LOG to some metallers 3 years ago and said "This stuff will be selling 100K+ copies in 2004!" I bet they would have been all for it. But not that it has actually happened, do LOG get some support? Hell no! "LOG suck dude, fucking Intestinal Gangway Tract should be getting all the credit, BR00tal grind shit! Yeah! Then when they get popular I'll shit on them too!!!" To all the metallers that look past bullshit like this and support good metal bands like LOG, no matter how 'popular' they are, I salute you.

Just imagine Slayer and Pantera mixed together and you get Lamb of God. Im from the UK and not much of bands like these come over, and not many people know who these are... One thing that angers me is some of the serious bullshit some people post on here, you should read the lyrics to Fear Factory - Cyberwaste lol. Im a massive slayer fan, and its a breathe of fresh air to see some decent new music coming out. Anyone who calls these Nu-Metal should be fucking shot, how the fuck can you compare them to the likes of Spineshank or Papa Roach. All that shit thats being said is obvious cyberwaste lol. I love Lamb of God with a passion, i got all thier albums including BTP. I have to say the NAG album is very RAW metal which i prefer on some days, but then again on other i prefer ATPB. The new album is fucking amazing, especially the instrumental song "Ashes of the wake" fucking ripps you up man. And the last track reminds me of seasons of the abyss. This is a must have for any true metal fan, and its nice to see a band this heavy getting recognition, no one is to say they are mainstream at this point it can only be a matter of opinion. Cheers dudes, keep rocking!

Now I have not heard the new one but does anyone else hear a sludgy technicality that mimics some Morbid Angel riffs. Is this death metal or what. The New American Gospel production was really bad. I don't know who thinks it wasn't. It was all compression and jumble. There was no urgency on that album, it was lazy. That's on the producer as much as the sound quality. Performance should be top notch for an album...not slop. The mastering is piss poor. If an album is peaking every speaker you play it on, someone fucked up...period.

This cd is a little predictable. Understandable since they wrote it so quickly. But the second half of this disc is some killer stuff. I like the production by Machine. There's a lot of bass drops behind the guitars. And the mechanized drums at the end of the one song are nice touches. Solid disc, a little predictable, but still awesome.

As an aside, I noticed for the first time ever on a CD that there is a big ugly FBI anti-piracy warning on both the disk and the back of the cd case telling me that it is a federal crime to copy this cd. Not only is this a complete waste of FBI resources, but it's a damn ugly blemish on the cd itself. Hopefully, this bullshit won't spread past Sony records.

I just got this CD and I must say the prod is excellent, especially the drums. This album is very potent and enjoyable considering the last one was released in 2003, that's not a great deal of time to write songs and they were perpetually touring. If As the Palaces Burn had the same sweet prod as Ashes of the Wake, it would have been close to a classic. I honestly find that it is a more compelling listen. Two great albums nonetheless.

I'm surprised nobody's really come out to trash this band yet. I think Lamb of God haters like black metal, which completely ruins any shred of credibility in them. Sure, there are hundreds of bands more brutal than LOG, but not too many as powerful and convincing. And yeah, Chris's drumming is far beyond decent. Not that he could ever think to outplay Richard Christy or Tony Laureano, but neither of those two would think to play the parts that Chris Adler does. He actually plays with the guitar players, instead of just keeping the beat or soloing through every song. He thinks about how what he's playing is going to affect each riff and he plays the kit well.
