I think I know what bothers me about Doom. I think it’s that it’s a great idea, and when done correctly can be extremely effective - as a counterpoint in an album filled with faster, livelier music. But as a stand alone style, one song is all I can really take. I simply lose interest. And you figure most doom songs are like elevntybillion minutes long, that is a fuck of a lot of space for me to not be interested.

That being said, Officium Triste's Reason, taken one song at a time is pretty damned good. They capture the grandeur and scope of the form as well as anyone I have heard. Slow movements and melodies and grumbling vocals, a touch of symphonic keyboards. Lots of space for the imagination to roam. And, you know, depression. Lots of depression.

The guitars are good-n-thick, echo-y and simple. The drums aren’t reinventing the wheel, but they do the job. Overall the music has a good crunch juxtaposed with simple, compelling melodies.

But as I said before, a whole fucking record of this stuff is just too much. These songs would kill on a record with faster compositions - Hypocrisy’s best stuff springs to mind. But slow song after slow song never really delivers any impact apart from the general interest in the melodies. Emotionally I just think there needs to be more at work.

This is a good album, especially for fans of heavier Doom. For metal fans in general, this may be a decent changeup on a multi disc system with “random” on and Morbid Angel or Immortal as the other discs… it’s well written, well produced and well executed. But in the end it is a one trick pony. I can recommend it but just barely.

The simple fact is that it's so obvious when bands put thought and craft into their music, that it doesn't matter if all the songs are plodding, or hyperspeed, for that matter. It's not the speed of the album that's gonna keep you hooked, and the same way there are dozens of speed-addicted thrashalong bands, there's plenty of lazy doom bands who just assume that if they have a killer bottom end and menacing atmosphere, then their job is done. What I got from this review is that, unlike, say, Dopethrone or Khanate, these dudes just made a lame, generic, unoutstanding doom album, definitely not one that would convert an outsider to the genre. And that's really not worth anyone's time who's not exclusively obsessed with doom. Still, critiquing the genre as a whole, doom's a relatively small pool on the whole, so much less slack is cut when a band doesn't stand out, whereas, say, a straightahead DM band that makes a serviceable album is lauded as "classic" if only because they're not completely generic. Seriously, I've never seen the term 'genius' abused as frequently or inappropriately as in metal.

not a very good review. I always wonder why sites don't have people that are into a certain style of music review that style. This guy even states he doesn't like doom metal per se. Why the hell review it if you don't understand what makes the genre and it's fans tick? Personally I think this is one of the best damn doom metal cds to come out in a long fucking time. I bought it on recommendation via a review by Erik Thomas on digitalmetal.com...if anyone's interested there's a much more concise well thoght out and informative review of this cd on Digital Metal. Check out the review and certianly check out the CD.

sessions loves genre-bashing - he did the same the last time he reviewed a black metal album. try handing it to someone else to review if you can't understand the genre. you're wasting our time and you insult the band...

I like this cd a lot, and this is a fairly decent review. It almost seems like you are reveiwing doom as a genre, rather than this particular album though.
