Album Review

Meshuggah probably needs no introduction. They’ve even become fairly well known to a much broader audience than one might expect for their style of technical thrashy metal. Despite the fact that I definitely wouldn’t regard it as a sell out of any kind, their last album, Nothing, was a big let down after the great Chaosphere. There was much speculation about where they’d head next after the unusually large amount of success that Nothing afforded them, and many seemed to think they’d head in a much more commercial direction. I can’t imagine a 21-minute EP with only one song as a big step in a commercial direction. This will never be played on any radio station or MTV, simply for its massive scope if not also for its quite extreme and somewhat esoteric sound.

After Nothing, I found myself not expecting too much from I. Nothing had some interesting songs and was definitely a very well executed album highlighting Meshuggah’s technical skill, but it was ultimately extremely boring. I is definitely a return to form. Though not stylistically too far removed from Nothing, they’ve managed to create something far more compelling than anything on their last full length was. When making a single 21-minute song, keeping it compelling is absolutely essential. Thankfully, they realized that and really pulled it together and wrote something that kicks ass from start to finish while nearly always sounding like it belongs as a single song. There’s one transition at around fourteen minutes and forty-five seconds that, while not quite awkward, isn’t very smooth, but it’s no big complaint; nothing’s perfect.

Obviously one of the selling points for Meshuggah is their impressive musicianship. It’s in full form on I, with more of their signature odd rhythms and strange guitar sounds courtesy of their 8-string guitars. There are also some great leads on this EP that blow away just about all of Nothing. I think what’s most impressive, though, is that these musicians can all keep in time with each other while playing such complex material. The production on I is plainly used more to augment the great musicianship than anything else, but it does allow for a few moments of crushing, chaotic brutality as well. Every instrument is clearly audible the rest of the time, though, presumably so that listeners can marvel at what great musicians they are. And what great musicians they are.

I is nothing but a big step in the right direction for Meshuggah. If their next full length maintains (or exceeds) the level of quality found here, it’ll be a huge success. Whatever’s in store for the band in the future, I is certainly plenty to tide fans over. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s as good as Chaosphere, but hey, it’s better than Nothing.

This Ep is tight. Its too bad that when I bought it I didn't realize it was one 20 min song. I thought is was a full length album. It was the same price as a full length cd which is sort of dumb. However, I was not disappointed. It was my first dip into Meshuggah and definitely not the last.

Yes, gotta disagree that Kidman is not suited to Meshuggah. Who do you suggest takes his place? Or, more concisely, what style of vocalist should? Because Kidman is surely at the top of that particular spectrum. Yes, gotta agree, Catch 33 was a little too dense even for me, too much art, not enough METAL. I love the new "bendy" style Meshuggah have exhibted on the last 3 releases, but I can't help feeling that "I" is the only time it's been fully utilized to kick some ass, so to speak. But, thousands may disagree.

Although his vocals have changed on this cd I don't think there could be a better singer for Meshuggah. Half of the time he is singing along to the polyrythms. I mean just listen New Millenium Cyanide Christ. I actually think Jens Kidman may be one of the most underrated vocalists in all of metal.

I agree with Roccdrummer............this is metal but i think the singing is fine for that song. As far as catch 33 goes i just couldn't get into it no matter how much i spun it.

The ending of Straws Pulled At Random is one of the best pieces of music ever written in my opinion. Tons of feeling. By the way, most of Meshuggah's shit has emotion in it. They just approach songwriting different.

I really enjoyed Nothing, in a way I prefer it to Choasphere. It's just down in tempo which makes it a sh*t load more groovy, there's mood to most of the songs in Nothing and not just brutallity which is what I think most of you probably pick up on. Instead of actually listening to the grooves and riffs you're listening to the chaotic sound they produce, which is kinda fine, but not a good move surely for a band that has so much more to offer than just speed and carnage. Most people that don't like Nothing have said they love I, and strangley enough I is much faster and trashy so you can why I have this opinion.

i don't think they get enough credit for their musicianship. They are the only band I know of that write songs in 4/4 time but make most people think the cd is skipping. They might sound repetitive at first listen, but once you understand it.... it makes complete sense.

dude, Dailor is awesome... no doubt, but listen to earlier Meshuggah like Contradictions Collapse and None. Haake can drum jazzy circles around Dailor. Most of the reason why he doesn't go all out and flow all the time is because it doesn't really fit Meshuggah, but he can do it with ease.

The section that everyone keeps talking about where haake dums 4/4 with one and 6/8 with the other is fucking incredible, not least because he keeps it up for a full 2 minutes doing different stuff with his feet all the time. What haake doesnt have in free flowing jazzy mentalness (like brann dailor, my favourite) he makes up for by being the best precision drummer in the world. Mike who?

Excellent EP,I can't wait for the next album.A few boring passages but it still kicks arse anyway. And if you think there are anyelements of nu metal in Meshuggah's sound then you really are an idiot.

Huh? Someone else's got their definitions ill-sorted. The only nu-metal I know with such strangely timed phrases is Mudvayne. These guys sound nothing like Mudvayne. That, and Head and Munkey combined are no match for Thordendal. I like it. Repetetive, but I think that's the point. Definitely goes where no-one else has gone, that's for sure.

this obviously does sound like korn, since their drummer plays 4/4 with one hand 6/8 with the other and they have blistering solos. Total nu metal dood

I'm a Meshuggah fan, but I think their reputation for great musicianship is a little undeserved. The drums are nice, the rest is very repetitive. I like it, but i'm not blown away by their ability. I heard this today and liked it. Must buy.

Like most people I found "Nothing" to be a huge disappointment, but this new EP "I" is fucking amazing. Best Meshuggah album since Destroy Erase Improve easily. That fast double-bass drum part in the middle where Tomas Haake's hands are both playing totally different time signatures has got to be one of the most difficult drum parts I've heard ever.

I sure am glad you cleared that up for me: "Nothing" was the first Meshuggah album i bought, and i took it back the next day...but everywhere i looked people were just pleading for every metalhead to get into this band, so finally someone i met in the forums convinced me to buy "Chaosphere" and i fucking LOVE it...so i guess "Nothing" was just kinda boring in comparison; definitely getting this

What a simple-minded individual you are “Meshuggah”. Your eloquence is staggering: “they fucking suck…” Evidently you do not appreciate Meshuggah and that’s cool, to each his own, right? But people like you are so god damn annoying. If you are going to take the time to share your thoughts about one of the most venerated bands out there, you should at the least try to generate a semblance of articulate thought to demonstrate why you do not like them. Anyway, “I” cannot wait to listen to this record.
