Could anyone have really doubted the power of this album before it was even released? I felt this was one of those albums you just knew would blow you away before you even heard a second of it. It's so surprise considering Nile's quick rise to fame with the outstanding Amongst the Catacombs of Nephran-Ka and Black Seeds of Vengeance. Both of those albums were good, but it was only a matter of time before Nile perfected their sound, and they have done so with In Their Darkened Shrines. The entire album is one epic masterpiece, from the blistering fast, The Blessed Dead, to the monolithic ending to the album, the four part In Their Darkened Shrines. This album is brutal down to its very core. I read a recent interview with founding member, vokillist, and guitarist, Karl Sanders; and in that interview he mentioned he felt this album was meant to be listened to the whole way through to get the full effect. I whole-heartedly agree with that statement. Although there are a few standout tracks you could skip around to, if you really want to get the feeling found within this beast you have to listen start to finish in one shot. The musicianship found on here is the standard Nile assault on the senses, with insanely fast parts that can suddenly shift to just plain brutal in-your-face crushing power to the epic almost battle music type sound that just makes you want to go grab a spear of sword and run someone through. The drumming dished out by Tony Laureano is superb. Everything is crisp and solid, and his double kicks are spit out like rounds from a machine gun. The tri-vokill attack is the same, with Jon Vesano replacing long-time member Chief Spires. One of my favorite songs vokill wise is the second part of In Their Darkened Shrines, entitled Invocation of Seditious Heresy. Karl and Dallas dish out ultra fast and technical guitar riffs along with some great slower brutal stuff. The samples and Egyptian instruments are used perfectly throughout the album. I really like the stuff in the twelve minute epic, Unas Slayer of the Gods. I have always enjoyed Nile's lyrics. It's great to see a change with the typical lyrical subjects found in extreme metal. It's like being educated while listening to death metal, I love it. I have always been into different mythologies, and found Egyptian mythology interesting. Karl really knows his stuff. For any of the lyrics you don't really understand he gives linear notes inside the booklet explaining the meaning of each song. Hell, my history teacher I had two years ago was intrigued by a Nile shirt I had (it said "The Scourge of Amalek is Upon You" on the back) and I brought in the lyrics to Black Seeds of Vengeance for him to see and he was extremely impressed with the knowledge Karl has on the Egyptian culture and mythologies of old. What can I say, the guy knows his stuff. If you're going to do something, do it right. The production on this album is great, topping all previous efforts. The entire feeling of the album is emitted perfectly. The samples sound perfect, but are never over powering, the vokills are standout and at times haunting, the drums are crisp and clear, and the guitars sound great. I cannot find one thing wrong with this album and I've been looking ever since I got my grubby little hands on it. It's a hell of a solid release from the Carolina death metalers. If you don't already have this album you should be kicking your own ass right now and when you're finished you have to hurry to your nearest record shop and pick this masterpiece up. With awesome songs like The Blessed Dead, Unas Slayer of the Gods, and Wind of Horus how could you pass it up? Now if you'll excuse me I have to go back to listening to possibly the best death metal release of the year.

Nile.. nuff said. Can you believe i have never found black seeds in a store? Greece sucks in this section. It has to be metallica to be brought in a store..

This and black seeds, two of the best death metal albums of all time.

This is still awesome stuff. Amazing technicality and a vision to be different. I do prefer ANW and the latest but as usual the ridiculous tempos and cool breakdowns make this a classic. It is Nile, its not the brutal atonal take of Suffocation but a unique beast.

Top tip for shooing away the blues: Play 'Unas The Slayer Of the Gods' and sing along, but cunningly replacing the name 'Unas' with your own, for a 12-minute death metal showcase about how awesome you are.

Good point about Unas, Sculpy; the 'epics' on Annihilation are better than this track is. Thats not to say it changes my earlier statement though, or that the song blows.. its all good.

I only found Ramses to be cheesy in a live setting. Once the intro passes, the song is pretty damn good.

Beneath the Catacombs would be right below In the Darkened shrines. @Nailed to Gold I know what you mean lol, I never was into the whole symphonic egyptian thing. But whatever, I just ignore that and enjoy the good tracks.

Nailed, tis a shame you find that Ramses sample cheesy! It took me by surprise the first couple of times I heard it too, but I like it now. To me it sounds primitive and contextual, and segues effectively into the opening guitar riff. I think AotW's epic numbers have better riffs and structures than Unas though. Unas is a bit broken.

I couldn't say which is best or even which is my definite favourite. All I know for myself is that the worst one is Shrines. I love the opening three to five tracks, but the second half of the album is numbingly boring to me. They all have something to offer though, if only a characteristic sound, that's for sure.

Heres my opinion: Nile is good live, and they usually are pretty precise, however, their samples and sound effects actually take away from what they do. Hearing the beginning of Ramses Bring of War live just makes me laugh, really. Its kinda cheesy if you ask me. Any other Nile album > Annihilation of the Wicked

Firstly, I like Wounded Land's argument, a whole bunch.. clever observation. Hmm.. Ive enjoyed both, but my money is on Shrines. Annihilation is good; really fucking good actually, but the songwriting is just better as a whole on the previous effort by comparison to the latter. Much more variation of style going on, and as Herodian points out, the drumming is better (message to the fanboys - this is not saying that the new drummer is shit either). Im not even going to touch the lyrical content or themes - I dont really care one way or the other. The sheer number of classics from Shrines should enough to seal it anyways. Perhaps the real question Id ask is In the Darkened Shrines vs. Black Seeds of Vengence.. Shrines or Annihilation compared to anything else in the Death Metal genre though? Pfft, shits all over it.

@Vote I will give you a real answer: I find the drumming more creative in ITDS, theres more variation between the songs, and most of the classic Nile I like is off ITDS. I found Annihilation good, but dragged a bit.

Ok then..........so which do you play more often? I'd have to go ITDS because I can't get enough of Unas Slayer of Gods.

Wounded Land | posted on 1/2007 | Reply
It's never a question of "better". At least, not with Nile. Each album is a new journey; in its' own right, a great experience. Without ITDS, AOTW is a masterpiece and vice versa. If you know both then it is only best - for you get even greater rewards. For those who do not understand: "Be drowned, be drowned, be vomited upon."

wow I can't believe I missed a shot at this "Winston" comment. Fuck me. But here goes: Nile pulls off all of this live, faster than on the albums sometimes. Note for note, excellently played. They are a great live band, and quite frankly, a fucking force of nature. I've seen them many times and they never fail to impress. Triple death vocals, wall of sound, hell even the lighting adds well to the monsterous atmoshpere they create live. One of the best death metal shows I have ever seen. The only thing "winston" could pull of live is his own dick to shove up his asshole. "Nile would have to be one of the worst live acts ever": sounds like you haven't seen them live, so like a politician, you don't know what you are talking about. If I'm wrong and you have seen them, you still don't know what you are talking about. So do us all a favor: take a knife and stick it in your throat below your right ear, and pull it down towards your chin. Shitbag.

Winston if heaviness is all about attitude then the most heavy albums are Load/Reload by metallica... Annihilation of the wicked is not heavy because theres no heavy attitude? Yea right my man... Winston nile are great live. Went to a live at summer for Annihilation Of The Wicked and the guys played it as it was from the album. Maybe you saw them in a bad day and as typical fuck ass you jumped into conclusion too quickly... O and something else. There was a period that the death metal scene was something like the metalcore scene today. 100000 useless crapy bands and 3 good. Then we saw Nile... and the scene became antagonistic again. What about that? Anyway i agree with most of the others

My fav Nile CD by far ,loving the way they mix it up on this album. I fuc*ing adore the fact that they use some pretty interesting insruments ,its an awsome album. Glad that Nile are not afraid to experiment they are one of the very few bands in their genre who are not afraid to do something totally different.

They already mentioned that 1 note-ness in an interview as a problem. But I think ripping apart people , summoning ancient monsters, transforming into a snake, and eating the gods is pretty heavy. And if they were going for speed...they'd be grindcore. Oh, and what was ment by ",just one solid plethora of sound"? Also, I can't understand the rest of your argument....Be concise. Think a bit.

Death Metal saviours my ass!.Did anyone ever tell these guys that spaces between note are as important as the notes themselves.Heaviness is about attitude not speed or volume, just one solid plethora of sound. To bad Nile can't pull this stuff of live,Nile would have to be one of the worst live acts ever.

I bought this album and was not disappointed! This was great beyond my death-metal expectations! The whole thing pulled my convulsing body through a darkest-light infested catacomb--the only sound being my pathetic whimpering being echoed by the chants of gods long replaced! In other words: kick-assery levels were off the goddam scale. This may sound like major kiss-assery, but this is the epitome of really-fuckin'-great death-metal...song 9 reminds me of Lower Norfair in Super Metroid...floggin' fucktards! 3 and 11 have really tight drumming and 5 is over 11 minutes (I didn't even notice until I listened to it twice)! If you even have a faint like for death metal...or metal in general, buy this!

I didn't even have to read this review to tell that Nile is a fucking great band. I love the whole Egyptian Mythology "theme" (saying "theme" makes me fell kinda pompous...). I really want to pick this piece of unearthly death metal now and tear my bedroom walls down listening to it. And...all that talk about "faggots" and "sucking" makes my think of the bathroom walls at my pussy public school. Suburbs...
