For those that don’t know, The Ruins of Beverast is a one man black/doom metal band consisting of former Nagelfar (the German one) drummer Alexander Von Meilenwald. And with his third album, he has released an album that would have easily been a top 3 release of 2009 had I found it for cheaper/earlier.

As with 2006's Rain Upon the Impure, the album is a long (80 minute) listen, but incredibly worth every single second of its depressive, but still majestic art. With a fuller production and even more use of clean chants and synths, Foulest Semen is even more regal than its predecessor, with even more lavish, hypnotic plodding and moistened musical depravity that’s rife with shimmering, yet despondent brilliance.

The album starts with the solemn hymnal chant of the 10 minute “I Raised this Stone as a Ghastly Memorial”- a start that might perturb some more elite black metal fans with its plodding pace, but things get nastier when some cavernous growls and shrieks finally kick in to the languid rumble. After the short chant of “Alu” (there’s three of these small interludes throughout), the album really starts to pick up with the brilliant “God's Ensanguined Bestiaries” which is four minutes of blistering black/death metal followed by a simply numbingly good and rending mid paced rumble that’s on par with any of the top doom/death acts. And when I mean doom, I don’t mean the usual one man, basement quality blackened doom that’s reedy and thin, but a sonorous, melancholy that’s dripping with depressive moods, not just psychotic shrieks and moans. Just listen to the twelve minute wrist opener “Mount Sinai Moloch” and the furtive shifts of “Kain's Countenance Fell” (even with its black injection)– they are more My Dying Bride and Pantheist than it is Leviathan or Xasthur.

The album's 1:19 runtime is simply enthralling from note to note. Even the challenging, long songs like “The Restless Mills” (especially the last few minutes) and 15-minute “Arcane Pharmakon Messiah” (with a surprisingly sturdy groove about halfway in) command your attention, especially with their dramatic orchestration (notably horns a war drums), and willful descent into the depths of droning, regal despair while still keeping things black and menacing )“Blood Vaults (II - Our Despots Cleanse the Levant)”).

The Ruins of Beverast is one of those rare acts that transcends music and becomes true art and with his third album, has cemented his status in the elite category of artists. It’s a shame his albums are so hard to find at a decent price outside of Europe.

Oops forgot to reply...They don't really bother me baby. I'm sure even you, a metal man of 40 years, who purchased Tygers of Pan Tang's first album the day it came out has to cringe a little when you see someone in girl pants and hair over one eye wearing a Bathory shirt. I'm really not trying to argue. I just noticed you say that no one knows of them and figured I would let you know that they aren't unknown. Quite the opposite. They were on the two Terrorizor magazine CDs in a row. The second time they had the first track I believe. Anyway, my apologies. I didn't mean to offend you so greatly and bring out your hostility. I know it's hard that Gojira got big after being the most kvlt band this side of My Dying Bride. It sucks that Cascada got so big too! I was listening to her first album way before Evactuate the Dancefloor became popular. Now I hear it every time I go to the gym and I see girls lip syncing to it. I know, I know...I should just go find another gym. Praise Jesus.

What's a faggo? I'm sure it is exactly what I think it is but it shouldn't matter if a flannel shirt wearing 16 year old in a coffee shop listens to this album. It's fucking fantastic. @Compeller - if those "shitfaces" bother you so much, I suggest you find another coffee shop.

"You mostly listen to post rock and doom. How indie can you get?" I mean, I could be wrong, but I'm guessing it would be more indie to listen to... Y'know... Indie?

Sounds like I should be paying more attention to what 16 year-olds wear in coffee shops. Also, did I mention this album rules? I am neither wearing flannel nor of recent driving age.

idesofmarch, you are obviously an indie faggo metaller. You mostly listen to post rock and doom. How indie can you get? You also obviously know of The Ruins of Beverast and hold them dear enough to cry. I don't see how your opinion can cancel mine out. And besides, I'm not saying Beverast sucks. Their first album is one of my favorite albums of recent years and Foulest Semen is pretty decent. And yea Reverend, most flannel shirt wearing indie shitfaces love Silencer. Bathory, Burzum, and Sear Bliss are another three bands they won't shut up about lately (not that any of those are bad...just ridiculous seeing 16 year olds wearing their shirts in coffee shops while trying to out-indie each other by saying Nick Cave, Bat For Lashes, Satan, and Bathory in the same sentence).

@Compeller I highly doubt your statement holds any truth. Faggo

Sorry to break it to ya vortex, but The Ruins of Beverast are probably one of the five biggest black metal bands right now. Every indie faggo I meet loves them along with their indie-metal cherries Wolves in the Throne Room and Silencer...

@exploding pool: As a United States-based publication, we typically review things based on their North American release dates. This album hasn't even been released in the States yet--it will be available this spring.

Finally a review for this thing. This guy is amazing. I found out about this band through a review that Erik wrote and I've been hooked ever since. This is easily my favourite personal band now that nobody knows about (now that Gojira is so big).

State-sider's can pick it up for about 15-clams over at the Ajna Offensive. It took me a while to get into this one (especially when compared to his first two), but now I love it. It's like Ruins of Beverast filtered through early Type-O Negative, in a very strange sorta way.
