Album Review

Score 7.1

When Finland’s doom/death act Swallow the Sun released their debut, The Morning Never Came back in 2003, they appeared poised to be the next great Finnish band and join the likes of Amorphis, Insomnium, Rapture and their ilk in the ranks of legendary Finnish acts. However, with 2005's Ghosts of Loss and 2007's Hope, the band entered more progressive, clean and Katatonia/Opeth influenced waters, and I think it's fair to say the band leveled out after an incredible debut. I’d like to sit here and say that Swallow the Sun are back with more rending doom death, but the fact is, New Moon fails to stand out from the pack of their Finnish counterparts and the band continues into more delicate and artistic pastures.

Not that New Moon is a bad album, it's typically Finnish and well done in its somber elegance and hues and in fact, opening track “These Woods Breathe Evil” starts the album with some surprisingly heavy riffage and pacing with vocalist Mikko Kotamaki screaming and growling fervently and new drummer Kai Hanto (Rotten Sound, Wintersun) giving the track a sturdy back bone.  However, second (“Falling World”) and third track (“Sleepless Swans”) soon show the band's more soothing, though still somber direction as Kotamaki croons and sings (with a typically Finnish sporadic growl here and there) with mournful, almost Paradise Lost pacing and mopey choruses.

Still, Swallow the Sun occasionally prove they can deliver rending doom death with the duo of “…An Heavens Cried Blood” and the female flocked “Lights on the Lake” (with a surprising black metal injection), but even then it's never as moving and emotionally draining as the band's early works; it just seems more tempered and more superficially sad than music that tugs on your heartstrings without even trying. You just get the sense Swallow the Sun have a bit of an identity crisis four albums in - just listen to the title track. . That all being said, the nine minute “Weight of the Dead” is a Finnish doom/death epic despite its sudden ending.

It's ironic that the album is called New Moon as Swallow the Sun seem to be a more sparkly, commercial version of their Finnish brethren, and also have the potential to be as divisive as their vampyric namesake at this point in their career.

I've given this band a listen pretty much every time they release an album, and every time I've been underwhelmed. I thought seeing them live a couple of years ago would make me a believer but they managed to do exactly the opposite...the music felt a little too sensitive to commercial concerns. I dunno, if I'm in the mood for current doom/death nothing tops Daylight Dies.

way to name your album after a Twilight movie...

Absolutely hate that there isn't one fucking review without a goddamn twilight reference just because of the title...that said, it's a very solid review. I agree with most things you say, and a lot of the criticism, but think a bit more highly of the positives and would probably give this a 7.5, just slightly up a bit.

This is really enjoyable just not as good as The Morning Never Came. Some of the catchiest songs they've written, just not the most emotionally draining. I'm probably one of the bigger fans of this band here, so I'm a bit biased, but I think this is better than Insomnium's new one. Four rock solid albums so far and I'll definitely look forward to the next.

Gotta say I've been digging this thing since it came out, it's gotten a lot of play time for me the past couple of months. I really love some of the black metal tinges in some of the songs. I really didn't feel the soul devouring depression and emotion from some of the earlier albums. The musicianship keeps getting better and better, but the songwriting just isn't keeping up.

I just bought this today. $8 digital purchase on Amazon.com. Though not their best offering, this is definitely still worthy for any fan of the band.

Great review man, just kidding. This album just has something about it that keeps me coming back for more. Great disc. On a side note, anyone heard Cormorant's new one because I can't stop spinning that one. Complete awesomeness.

Where's the review for this?? What's the hold up?! I want it now! Seriously though...very interested to see what this gets. It's a strange album. Still totally Swallow the Sun, but they're realy evolving, and its' not a bad thing, though I don't think they'll ever top their first album.

Well, it's classic Swallow the Sun, is it not? Should satisfy fans of the band, but if you didn't like them before I don't see this album winning you over. I enjoyed it myself - all the songs are well-crafted and emotionally charged, though the closer was a bit lacking in this respect. Still, pretty solid overall. A good output from a very consistent band.

I think I'll pick this up when I see them in December supported by Insomnium & Omnium Gatherum.
