Album Review

Score 8.5

Most progressive bands eventually reach a point where their fans will become divided for good. That one album where the band in question, who has been hinting at major stylistic change for some time, finally crosses a permanent threshold into a new sound, losing appreciation from some old fans while gaining attention from a new bunch in the process. Enslaved, whose lengthy track record is almost unmatched in quality and innovation, have reached this point with Vertebrae. The good news is that they’ve crossed over gracefully and have come out on the other side sounding as good as they always have.

Enslaved have been climbing steadily up the progression ladder to a more atmospheric style for several albums now, and with Vertebrae, find themselves even more far removed from their blackened past then they were after Ruun. So anyone wondering if these guys were going to start exploring more aggressive territory should think again. There’s much less of the thundering rhythms and aggressive tremolo riffs found in the last several albums, with more concentration on airy ethereal passages, post-rock influenced clean guitar figures, and layers of different instrumental textures. The multi-tracked clean vocals are much more prominent this time around, and even when Grutle falls back to his guttural screams, such as in the hypnotizing “Reflection,” the overall atmosphere is more tranquil and introspective than the band has ever sounded before.

Some may view this as an automatic step down from the balance of atmospherics with extreme metal heaviness so effectively conceived on albums like Below the Lights and Monumension, but make no mistake, Enslaved pull off this less aggressive style beautifully. The angular riffs, dense melodies, and trippy psychedelic tones are expertly constructed and without a shade of pretentiousness, delivered by tasteful but expressive musicianship and a smooth, organic mix that brings out all the little nuances that this band incorporates while keeping things clear and heavy.

The way these guys mix their unique instrumental textures with their spiritual vocal/lyrical approach, while still managing to come up with memorable and cohesive songs, is incredible. The spacey layers of keyboards and guitars contained in “Clouds,” the emotional vocals and riffage of “To The Coast,” the mathy chug and soaring melodic peaks of “Vertebrae”…it all sounds genuinely mystical, and straddles the line between fierce tension and swirling ambience like only Enslaved can. “Ground” ushers in some gorgeous acoustic strumming and distant, ethereal vocals that sound more than a little Pink Floydian, before launching into one of the album’s few guitar solos, a simplistic but stirring lead passage that closes the song in epic fashion. The thrashy black metal riff that opens “New Dawn” is perhaps the only moment on Vertebrae that feels out of place, but the guys quickly regroup with more of their shimmering melodies and unique instrumental interplay, rendering the track a winner after all. “The Watcher” wraps things up with a series of morose clean sections and energetic tremolo melodies, ending on a sudden and non-pompous note that perfectly suits the more loy-key nature of this release.

I can understand those who may miss the band’s more intense elements, but it's hard to argue that in terms of evoking emotion and building a unique atmosphere, Enslaved hit it out of the fucking park with this album. Its innovative mix of influences, perfect structuring, and indefinable aura stands up to anything the band has released thus far. This is likely to be the outfit's most divisive work to date, and even longtime fans may need to give this a while to sink in. But rest assured that these guys have lost absolutely none of their amazing artistic vision and incredibly musical ability in their journey to slightly calmer waters. While by no means flawless, Vertebrae is quite unlike any metal album I’ve ever heard before, and is a must-listen for veteran Enslaved fanatics and outsiders alike.

*** I disagree with the score...it should have been higher IMO. Sorry. That sentence below made no sense.***

Although I disagree that the score should have been much higher, this is one of my favorite reviews on the website. I enjoy reading it from time to time, and the accuracy of the descriptions here really sets the standard for what a review should be.

Kjellson has an awesome scream. & has been in the band from day 1, so it's not exactly a case of "choosing a deeper growl" is it? When that is his voice.

Figure I would give this a shot after reading reviews. Amazing cd indeed except for the HORRIBLE black vox. OMG sounds like my kid making the voice from Grude. Totally ruined this otherwise unmatched experience of atmosphere/metal/prog, what a great cd. Why did they not choose to use a deeper growl (Dark Tranq, Amon, Opeth, Facebreaker type) or a more prominent blackmetal rasp like Cryonics or Immortal is just unfathomable. I cant listen to more than 1 song in a row, granted each song is a gem...if you can ignore the horrid black vox

I don't think Enslaved has gone as far to the "calmer" end of the musical spectrum as everyone says. They still retain a lot of black metal in their sound while incorporating the more progressive elements, definitely unlike bands that go for more of the loud-soft-loud approach. This album, like the rest of Enslaved's albums, is very original, and great.

@jimmy_coffin Enslaved was always into Pink Floyd, that's why you're hearing them in this album. I remember seeing at the concert that one of the members has a Dark Side of the Moon tattoo on his arm...I just can't remember which one..

This definitely didn't get a high score by default from me. I'm not even that big an Enslaved fan compared to some of the other writers (only own four of their albums). But I reeeally like this album. "Vertebrae" is one of the best songs of the year for me.

This one is definitely a grower. I've listened to it a half a dozen times so far but am warming up to the sound quickly. Like all the best albums it takes a few spins to really wrap your head around it. A couple of days ago I went on an Enslaved listening spree, starting with Below The Lights until I reached this album and definitely noted the linear progression from album to album. It may not be as heavy as their previous works, but the stellar musicianship more than makes up for it.

First, a disclaimer: This is my first Enslaved Album. And if they are all of this quality, then I will buy them all. "Grounded" is such a great song. Brundlefly is right, this is Black Metal's answer to Pink Floyd.

The culmination of their efforts over the years, and a true nod to Pink Floyd while still retaining blackened elements, unlike the hollow "Black Meddle" by Nachtmystium. This is truly a career defining album.

So why is Viking Metal at the forefront of the Metal Genre? It's quite simple, bands like Amon Amarth and Enslaved are very good song writers. This album blends ambient doom, floyd, and metal to perfection.

I`m with Captain all the way here. I like the album just fine but I do find the rasping vocals jar now the music has become so mellow. I`d be quite happy to see the band lose them altogether if they continue down this path on the next album. Also, yes, that guitar solo is awesome on Ground.

Exactly what Chris said. I think it's a good thing for them that they decided to keep the raspy vocals despite the direction their music is going to/went off to. It's sort of not playing by the rules and I like it. I'm enjoying this album immensely and am constantly at awe by the talent of these guys.

I actually really enjoyed the contrast of the black metal vocals with the quieter parts, particularly in "Reflection". Its an interesting mix that not too many bands have pulled off before.

I don't wanna come across as one of those "waaah, one of my favorite bands has changed over the years and isn't very heavy anymore" kinda metal fans. I honestly love to see bands push the envelope of their respective genres, and I completely understand the desire to continually develop and change over the years to help keep things fresh. What leaves me scratching my head as an Enslaved fan is why they continue to shirk their heaviness, yet keep so much of Grutle's blackened rasps. The result is a sound that's just too strange for my ears. I actually think fightingmike has the right of it: the mix honks and is way too lean on the bottom end. I still bought the album, and I'll continue doing so until they no longer call themselves a band. Perhaps some day down the road the Vertebrae switch will flick and I'll kick myself in the ass. I guess time will tell.

I love this band, but this isnt quite as amazing to me as their last two records. I give it a 5 out of 6. My main issue with this record is that the mix kindof bugs me. They went for the classic rock hard panning on the guitars and drums and the snare drum gets lost quite often on the faster songs and i kindof lose the groove of the beat. Other than that i love it though, great emotions and melodies!!!

Excellent album. I could care less that Enslaved has continued to step away from their earlier aggressiveness—with each new album the band reeks of coherent innovation. This is one of the few bands that I feel builds and improves their sound with each passing album. It seems that many bands may still put out quality music, but their sound has peaked at some prior date. With Enslaved, I feel I never know when their "magnum opus" will be.

Nice job on the review there, matey. I've been a fan of Enslaved since the first split with Emperor, and I don't think there's much the band could do at this point to shake my admiration for them and their incredible span of work. That said, I'm simply not very impressed with Vertebrae. I've given it countless spins waiting for the hook, but it just doesn't seem to click with me. The quiet passages are dreamy and beautifully constructed, but the metal portions are just too paper-thin; Vertebrae is sorely lacking HEFT. Grutle has a great black metal voice, and he still sounds as gritty as ever, but his rasp sounds more and more out of place with each lightening album. There are so many points on this record where I thought I was finally gonna be mowed over with a nice heavy hook, but it just consistently fires shy of that target. Anyway, that's obviously just one man's opinion, and like I said, I still consider myself a huge Enslaved fan, but this record and the band's general direction over the last two releases solidify my thoughts that they peaked with Below the Lights (here's to hoping they prove me wrong though!). Sidenote: the one beam of absolute brilliance here that'll likely keep me occasionally reaching for Vertebrae is the tune "Ground". The solo towards the end of that song is probably the prettiest lead I've heard in years.
