Alright, so I love death metal. I love blastbeats, I love hand-cramper guitar riffs, I love blind musical aggression, I love guttural growls, I love the utter rejection of diatonic melody, and did I mention that I love blastbeats? ‘Cause I do. In the end, though, the best death metal is the kind that takes all of the genre’s absurdities and excesses and merges it with that most vital of all musical ingredients—quality songwriting. Conversely, the most frustrating kind of death metal is the kind that has all of the above qualities in spades but drops the ball in the let’s-actually-write-songs department. For years, the band I referenced to exemplify this problem was Origin. Despite their prodigious technical ability and prominent position in modern death metal, Origin always struck me as a group of very fast musicians trying to one-up a genre full of other very fast musicians by—surprise!—playing as fast as they could, decent riffs be damned. It doesn’t matter how many times I listen to Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas; that shit still sounds like a blender full of rocks set on puree to me. Origin’s last release, Echoes of Decimation, showed signs of life with a new lineup and a few precious moments of melody, but by and large it was another exercise in flight-of-the-br00talbee guitars and a dude with sewing machine wrists blasting the fuck out of a drum kit. When the III lineup returned and Origin dropped a new album, I signed up for it expecting to provide a slightly different perspective from the relentless critical jocking these guys tend to receive. Fuck me, though, Antithesis threw me for a loop. Without sacrificing any of their vaunted speed, Origin have actually sat down and crafted some real, live, quality songs, and as a result they’ve produced the best work of their career by a long shot.

When you play as retardedly fast as these dudes—and if you haven’t heard Origin, then believe me, this shit could be played with half as many notes and still be faster than most metal—excellent sound quality is essential, and fortunately the Rob Rebeck/Scott Hull production job comes through in the clutch. Unlike pretty much every previous Origin release, the guitars remain clear at high speeds instead of breaking down into a percussive slurry, and Mike Flores’ acrobatic basswork is for the first time somewhat audible. Drummer John Longstreth turns in yet another stupidly precise performance; I’ve never been a huge fan of his over-the-top gravity blasting or triggered kit sound, but there’s no disrespecting the man’s ability. Fortunately he’s not given the Hate Eternal/Nile drums-to-the-fore treatment, and the quadruple-vocal attack of Flores, guitarists Paul Ryan and Jeremy Turner, and singer James Lee similarly doesn’t seize the stage unduly. “A place for everything and everything in its place” is the platitude of the day here, and it does wonders for Origin’s sound.

Really, though, Antithesis outdoes its predecessors because it has ten songs, as opposed to zero songs and approximately eight hundred bajillion riffs. The band seems to have broken out of its “let’s never write a song longer than four minutes ever, and what IS melody anyway?” rut and actually included some riffs that you might remember without listening to the CD seventeen times. Ryan and Turner have mastered the tactic of using sweep arpeggios as diversifying riff ingredients rather than a guitar solo party trick, as exemplified by “Finite” and excellent opener “The Aftermath.” Said opener also features a genuinely effective slowdown (holy fuck!), which is about where I realized that Origin might have grown up a little bit. Further, these guys seem to have caught the Eastern-melody bug infecting so many extreme metal bands as of late—“Wrath of Vishnu” is the most fucking hectic song that Nile never wrote, and even features a gratuitous but totally awesome guitar solo. The tech junkies among you have nothing to fear, as there are still traditionally overwhelming speed frenzies like “Algorithm” and “The Appalling” to sate your churn-churn-blast-blast craving.

Recidivism aside, Origin’s newfound maturity is best exemplified by Antithesis’s self-titled concluding track. Clocking in at a whopping nine minutes and for the most part rumbling along at something approaching a middling pace, it’s easily the catchiest and most diverse song the band has ever written. Now, don’t get me wrong here—these guys haven’t suddenly turned into Edge of Sanity. The vast majority of this disc is totally without any sort of dynamic, so you still won’t remember most of it until you’ve given it a goodly number of listens. Still and all, this is a huge improvement on Origin’s past work, and it’s probably the best technical death metal album I’ve heard this year—beats the fuck out of Brain Drill and even tops mainstays like Hate Eternal. Antithesis is essential for tech death fans and, if I’m not completely whacko, it’ll rope in plenty of new converts too.

I'm not a tech death fan but this album has been seeing some pretty regular play for over a year now. Scores are perfect, only thing keeping this from being an undeniable classic is the lack of a few really memorable tracks.

After repeated listens, i have come to the conclusion that "informis infinitas inhumanitas" and "echoes of decimation" are better records than this. I only prefer this than the self titled. Also in my opinion it deinately does not deserve 6 for the production.

They're still not expert songsmiths, but Antithesis is definitely a step in the right direction. I think the next album will be their true masterpiece. Here's to hoping.

Am listening as I type. Its got all the prerequisites. Its ridiculously technical. And at times catchy. But I listen to a band like Anata and get a whole different vibe on tech-death. More depth and well pace. Immolation has a sound as vugelnox stated. A definitive style of atonal riffing that is well their own. I am keeping on listening and hearing Cyrptopsy of course (in there better days) and the usual Suffo influence. I love this shit. Its good but I need a hook.

I have immense respect for Origin as musicians, and they're absolutely overwhelming live, but their music just doesn't speak to me. They're SO technically impressive that it breaks my heart to not get the same mindblowing feeling from their songs, even slightly. The new Hate Eternal & Decrepit Birth albums are preferrable to my ear (don't even get me started on the new Septicflesh...wow), and this new Origin sounds MUCH better than that last mess they threw out, but for whatever reason I still just can't click with these dudes. Best of luck to 'em if they can still keep the tornado as tight live as they used to, because I know this shit's gotta' hurt like a motherfucker to play night after night.

@FollowChrist I'm not sure if you're being serious but to me songwriting is always the biggest factor into how good an album is and many times is what makes or breaks an album from being shelved forever or returning to my stereo on a regular basis. It is what seperates albums like Close to a World Below from say Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas. Where both have pristine production and flawless musical talent one also features consistently excellent and memorable songwriting and one, as Doug said, is just rocks in a blender with zero replay value. Pure technical skill with no songs to back it up is always an exercise in tedium and boredom. I've yet to hear any band prove me wrong.

Sounds good. But I don't think anyone listens to Death Metal for songwriting. Good songwriting and death metal is kinda an oxymoron. No? It's jibberish. But off the chain musicianship? That's why this gets the nod.

I think that all mentioned bands are great and all their latest albums are great but Origin is much much brutal than Arsis , not as fast as Brain Drill is.,the drums sound better on Hate Eternal and the guitars are awesome on Decrepit Birth. Check the latest Hour Of Penance ,a good album like those mentioned.

no offense but, in my opinion, this is even better than the new decrepit birth! Origin is more brutal and heavier than them.

k fine, this does beat Brain Drill's and Hate Eternal's 2008 albums but it doesn't even come close to the great Decrepit Birth's Diminishing Between Worlds. That album is easily better than Origin, Hate Eternal, and Brain Drill. This is only my opinion tho.

Goddamn I love instrumentally complex metal and even moreso death metal but when you combine the two into the hybrid of tech-death I really can't for the life of me figure out why these quite talented bands simply are so fucking inept at writing good, memorable SONGS. I listen to bands like Gorguts, Anima Damnata or Immolation and I hear all manners of convoluted, dissonant and decidedly un-melodic riffing but it all fits together perfectly into memorable songs that you keep coming back to. Listen to a song like Rival the Eminent by Immolation for example. Vigna is pulling out some completely unorthodox riffs in that one but if it doesn't stick in your head for hours afterwards then you're as deaf as a stone. Given bands like this, the previously mentioned Brain Drill and the almost comedically over-hyped Necrophagist and there are just no songs and more importantly there is absolutely no feeling to it. Going through the motions for the sake of impressing with speed and musical ability. That said I'll be the first to admit that these guys are immensely talented musicians of the first order. Takes years of intense practice to arrive at this level of playing but its all for naught if you can't pen something worth really worth listening to. Songs, not mindlessly stacked riffs, make for good metal.

I didn't think that a band that sounds so much like another band (in a good way) would warrant so many angry lashes. My opinion? This album's awsome. So's Braindrill's album. If you get both, you double your tech-death fun. That's ok by me.

This was a real gem. I actually liked the vocals better on this than on ECHOES; sometimes the patterns felt just a little cluttered on that on that one. I haven't listened to much else other than this since I got it.

I disagree with the Brain Drill remark. Brain Drill's production is much better, and you can actually hear the vocals. Also, both albums have at least one gratuitous wanky tap-slap bass break, and Brain Drill's bassist is cleaner. They're essentiallly identical bands stylictically -and who really cares in the end- but I think you were way off the mark by saying Origin "beats the fuck out of Brain Drill".

Agreed that this beats both the new Brain Drill and Hate Eternal (though both solid releases). This is Origin's most well-written work to date and would have given it a higher songwriting score.

hold on just a second there, yourmom. I shouldn't have reviewed this album because I'm not an Origin fan? I call bullshit. you don't have to be swinging from a band's nutsack to write a reasonable review of their music--note that despite my mixed feelings on their prior work, I gave this a positive review. the point of a review is to give one dude's perspective on an album, not to serve as a mouthpiece for a band's fanbase.

Meh. I don't think Doug should've reviewed this, being that he obviously isn't into Origin, considering his comments on "Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas" (which totally slays this). The problem wih this record is that, honestly, they have slowed down andm ade longer songs- it makes them sound like every other tech death band. Sometimes it works, as the "Ubiquetios"and the title track totally own. But the faster songs don't do much for me...cause they're not fast by Origin standards. The funny thing is that they're probably playing at the same BPM they always have, but without James Lee barking every second, it doesn't seem like it. I know some people hated the fact that he never shut up, but I always thought that his relentless delivery was one of the things that made Origin unique. There's not nearly as many cool vocl patterns on this one as there was on the others. Overall though, still a good record. Better than Echoes, but not as Informis.

Pretty much in agreement with everyone. Easily their best album. I'm gonna have to agree with Irukandji on the Arsis mentions though. Even though they are both considered "technical" and "death metal," it's apples n oranges to me.

Origin has always been one of those bands whom i would love if they would, "slow the fuck down every once and a while, actually have variety to the songs so they would resemble something memorable, have their vocalist shut up sometimes and not try and compete with the other instruments, etc". I was excited about this album after hearing the aftermath and for the first time in a while, i was not let down by something i was excited about. This album is a complete step forward, the songs are just as brutal as anything they have ever done but much more mature and well written. They have corrected all of the problems I had with them in th past. I would have given a higher score in songwriting, not in comparison to other bands but in comparison to what they have done in the past. 6/5/6. I am in awe every time I listen to the drums on this album, John Longstreths best performance to date

I completely understand where you were going with this review. I really think that this tops Hate Eternal and Brain Drill's latest. Brain Drill may or may not be faster but they seem a little to spastic for me. Origin have always seemed to have more meat along with the blast-fest. Songs like Portal and Staring from the Abyss (which I started humming when I was reading this) are prime examples of the groove that Origin infuse into their best songs. I like the way that this album combines the things that I love about their previous albums with new elements like the title track. This album was stuck in my CD player and on my computer playlist for the last few weeks. At least until Arsis came in the mail.

What the fuck is wrong with you, Doug? This is by far the most structured work Origin has put together; I suggest listening to this a few more times, then pop in the new In Flames record and feel who much your head begins to hurt from killing brain cells. I mean, you covered all the right points but I just can't buy the 4.5 song writing, especially with the last 3 tracks and the monumental closer/title track. Finding this record @ Virgin, Orlando saved my sanity after that shit pile from In Flames. And yes the new Arsis keeps our faith in melodic death (that record came out of no where). But some of you lashers comparing this monster to Arsis is like comparing a custom chopper to a Ducati. Well, buy this record. It will be a classic to reference. And I'm not going to let this die until you guys and gals @ MR do it: review Absorbing the Disarray by Visceral Bleeding. It is a crime nobody got to it; it is one of last year's best records. Or at least it will melt your speakers.

Better than Brain Drill and Hate Eternal? Hm... I still think Brain Drill is faster (so does BPM-detecting software like Tangerine). That doesn't mean better, so I guess we'll see. What do you think about this compared to "We Are the Nightmare"? I don't think anything can touch that yet this year.
