Italy’s Novembre have a strong discography, so it’s not surprising that The Blue is yet another great record from the brothers Orlando and company. In fact, though not up to par with the devastating Classica or the emotion-filled Novembrine Waltz, The Blue is arguably their finest effort since 2001 – a six year span that included the releases of Wish I Could Dream It Again remake Dreams d’Azur in 2002 and Peaceville debut Materia in 2006.

Frontman Carmelo Orlando (vocals, guitars) has always had a versatile, unique voice, and he excels here by way of emotion-ridden, clean lines and biting, acidic growls. Distinct and passionate, Novembre wouldn’t be the same without him. The compositions themselves are somewhat varied, too, and it’s worth mentioning that the quintet continues to mildly evolve, ensuring that none of the seven albums could be mistaken for each other. Speaking of, a noticeable change is the increase in aggression – evident in the frequent use of growls – which is a notch or two above last year’s Materia. Following a serene, acoustic-laden introductory passage, “Anaemia” launches into a driven, melancholy verse that Orlando’s supreme growling and clean vocalizing enhance. Also compelling is the similar-minded “Triesteitaliana,” and one should perk up at the brief, guitar solos that pepper this and several other songs.

In addition, “Cobalt of March” and “Bluecracy” are equally deserving of praise, while parts of “Architeme” (2:49-3:19) are nothing less than earth shattering. For differences, however, the depressive “Nascence” contains female accompaniment, “Iridescence” brandishes a bold ending, “Sound Odyssey” incorporates piano, “Zenith” uses flute, and “Cantus Christi” utilizes acoustic guitar, which is prevalent throughout the entire recording. As is the case with Novembre’s offerings, “Zenith,” “Argentic,” and “Deorbit” make for a strong close to a highly consistent album. Still, in weighing their previous output, it’s not as if this displays radical improvement, nor deviates from the norm all that much. Even so, that’s not what I was hoping for, nor expecting.

While they’ve been compared to Katatonia, The Old Dead Tree, and Opeth, among others – perhaps the reasoning stems from the fact that they’re all European, have vocalists who both sing and growl (or used to), and convey a serious amount of emotion – there’s not a group out there that sounds exactly like Novembre, even if the aforementioned do indeed share a few traits. Regardless, The Blue, despite its occasional sameness, holds its own.

I think I'd probably put this album around a 6/5.5/5.5 - so thick and heavy both in terms of the music itself and the atmosphere.

Sorry Jishwa, but I'm gonna shit on this band, or at least this cd. I like a lot of this cd, but agree with the review about the sameness factor, which prevents me from listening to it that often. Are their other albums this repetitive sounding with their vocal delivery? I'm getting the same feeling about this as I am for the new Primordial-too much repetition in the vocal/melody department for me. Oh well, just my 2 cents. And holy shit I"ve never seen a positive post from Jimb! Frickin amazing.

Wow, yes definately some improvement over MATERIA, and almost good as their one before that - the masterpiece DREAMS D'AZUR !!! Top Ten material. Novembre have several amazing albums already check them all out

while the musicianship is good, the songwriting is definitely missing something the masterpiece 'novembrine waltz' had. though there are some great ideas throughout the album, sometimes it seems like riffs were somewhat randomly placed- some songs don't make any sense to me.

This is a brilliant release and one of the albums of the year. Novembre are quickly becoming one of metal's top shelf bands.

This album is an improvement over materia, imo. I'm digging it. Novembre truly deserves more exposure, it's proly one of their best ever achievements!

It's great to see these guys finally get some of the recognition they deserve. I've been a huge fan of these guys since they started and they'll always be one of my favorite bands. It's kinda funny how this is the second time they brought back the aggression after mellowing out a bit. I'm so sure this album will be great, I'm not going to listen to any samples. I want to go into this one fresh.

they're back on track after the horrendous 'materia.' though aneamia will get you right away, this album is dense and complex. it will take multiple listens to grasp.

Finally something on par with this year's Vintersorg, Fall of the Leafe and Swallow The Sun. While this may not top Classica for killer dynamic consistency (drags a little after "Cantus Christi") or Materia for harmonic brilliance and grow-on factor, it's still head and shoulders above many, many quality metal releases this year.

Great album. Not sure why "Materia" is constantly derided.....IMO it's far superior to "Novembrine Waltz", which was over-ambitious and pretentious. The last two have been a big improvement.

The Video for Aenemia is on youtube. The music is great, but the vocals are too far back in the mix, and they mumble. With the lyrics in front of me, I can barely find my place in the song because 90% of the words are intelligible. meh

Never heard these guys and keep blowing off buying their last one. Not to mention the Old Dead Tree ref has me very interested. Looks like a trip to the local store is in order for this weekend.

What a great band! I fully agree that The Blue is the best thing they've done since Novembrine Waltz. While Materia was a solid album, it was far from their best work and I also missed the screaming vocals. The Blue fixes that with plenty of screams, and better songs. I'm glad they're back.
