Though Savannah gave birth to this very band four years ago, the Baroness name is still a relatively new one to most, including myself. There's the First EP, the Second EP and the split with Unpersons, but I can't imagine too many people predicting the progression this band has made since their first 3-song recording for Hyperrealist in '04. Now, fittingly, Baroness blesses us, the unsuspecting listeners that we are, with their debut full-length, Red Album, an epic, playful approach to sludgy, atmospheric and exploratory metal.

As hype-driven as many Relapse bands tend to be, this one deserves the credit. This isn't mere Neurosis or Mastodon worship. This is a dirty rock mess best served with sweet tea under a warm Georgia sun. It sways and dips with with the understanding that the guitar is and always will be the central character to any metal template. There's a remarkable lack of self-awareness to songs like "Isak" and "Wailing Wintry Wind," where the band seemingly loses itself in a cloudy haze. These are the things most bands wish they could accomplish some time in their career. Baroness accomplishes this on their debut. Go figure.

As important as the guitars are to the band's sound, drummer Allen Blickle plays an equally important role in tying Baroness together. While not as technically accomplished or hyperactive as Mastodon's Brann Dailor, he often seems to guide his band mates in the same way that Dailor does. Certainly, he plays around far less with fills but he does open a few songs with the same sharp sense of rhythm and control. It works to the band's benefit to let the drums take the lead because guitarists John Baizley and Brian Blickle can jump into the fray seemingly unnoticed, and when those riffs hit (and believe me, they will), they will hit hard. "O'Appalachia" is perhaps the best example, proving that all it takes is a little over 2 minutes to record an outrageously tasty and filling set of riffs.

If there's any one thing that defines this album it is chemistry. Baroness is a band in the truest sense of the word. As individually talented as Baizley, the Blickles and Summer Welch (bass) are, there isn't one moment on this album where I am singling any one person out as particularly spectacular, which is a compliment of the highest form in my book. Being able to disguise individual talents through the strength of songwriting is a commendable and deservedly praised skill that most bands do not and will never possess.

While the almost schizophrenic "Cavite" from the band's split with Unpersons hinted at the band's progression, they were still very heavily influenced by hardcore and it often felt like the band's more rock-oriented passages were forced . Not so here. Each individual element is so seamlessly implemented that it's nearly impossible to distinguish them from one another, giving Red Album a uniquely uniform sound. Whether you're familiar with prior releases or not, you might as well pretend that this is your first time listening to Baroness because this is an entirely new band as far as I am concerned, and they have undoubtedly developed for the better. If anything, they've almost set the bar too high. If the debut is this damn good, how in the hell are they going to top it?

This album, for me, is like ISIS + Mastodon, and I LOVE it. The more I listen to this album, the more I like it. Each listen is like a new experience, because there's so much embedded in such a small amount of music. Not to mention this has one of my favorite album covers ever.

Great album, good review. Musicianship & songwriting is first class. The vocals are a bit hit or miss & my least liked element of the band. Sometimes they seem to fit well, other times you wish they were just an instrumental band, or have a different vocalist at the helm. Highly recommended.

I've been listening to this album for a few months now and but ever since I saw them live in a small bar last month, I've enjoyed it so much more. Awesome album, awesome band, awesome live show. If they play near you, do yourself a favor and go see them.

I think I'll buy it just for the artwork alone. Excellent. I'll have to check em out since I like mastadon and high on fire.

I was a little disappointed with this; I think its because the new High on Fire was so good, it got my expectations up a little too much.

Jobby you're absolutely wrong. it's ALL subjective. Nothing is set in stone, at all when you get down to it. I think it's a general consensis that somebody like Baroness, or Enslaved, or Tool even is far better than someone like Fergie or Puff Daddy..er...Diddy. This is the general opinion of people who you would consider to have "good" "refined" taste in music yes? Well, those people that like Fergie, or Diddy, or 50 cent or good charlotte, they think that music is legitimately good and wouldn't be able to even tolerated something like Enslaved, or anything like that. You can't say they just have bad taste, cause it's all opinion, unless of course you truly think we're not equal and that you truly are better than someone with that sort of opinion because yours is somehow more valid...in which case you're ignorant, arrogant, and need to have some sense knocked into you. That is all. Baroness is a very good band, and this album is unique and rocks...IN MY OPINION of course...heh...

No — 'taste' is not completely subjective to one's opinion. It's possible to have objectively bad taste, just as it is possible to objectively suck. Most of the bands who just plain suck don't make it far enough to even make CDs, but you can head to a local venue and see them fairly regularly. Or you could pick up a Poison CD. This whole 'that's just your opinion' thing is a load of unadulterated bullshit that people use to justify their own shit taste.

I think some people could grasp this a bit better if they looked at it as a rock 'n' roll album infused with some metal elements (which it is). This album isn't trying to be a de facto heavy metal album (and it certainly isn't), so I'm curious as to why someone would try to judge it as if it were presenting itself as such. This is a damn fine rock record, and one of the best pieces of music recorded in 2007.

The guy who made the Fugazi comparison was right on. This band sound like 90's indie rock filtered through a not-so-heavy metal filter. This album is very boring, if you've ever listened to music before......

I had a dream that fugazi and mastodon decided to do a project together and they asked me to play keyboards but my keyboard wouldnt plug in to the wierd outlets they have in bizarro dreamland so I just had to stand and watch as they created the most amazing shit I had ever heard.... so after waking up, I groggily logged on to metal review and saw a review for the red album and decided to purchase it. Weird.

Just a tidbit, anyone who's noticed the artwork on Red Album, Pig Destroyer's Phantom Limb, Darkest Hour's latest, and the forthcoming SkeletonWitch album, being so similar, they're all done by Baroness frontman John Baizley. I finally got to check out a song from these guys yesterday. I can't remember the name, but when Chris talks about the riffs kicking in, he ain't bullshittin'. Even though I wasn't able to completely get my head around the two songs I heard just yet, it was still pretty sweet. Definitley on my to-buy list along with Down III, Dethklok's Dethalbum, and Arch Enemy's Rise of the Tryant come the 25th. Damn, I'm gonna be broke.

I would really like to like bands like Baroness, Mastodon, and High On Fire, but their vocals kill it for me. All of these bands make really great music, and are obviously super talented, but I just can't dig the vocal style. That's just my opinion though, maybe I'm a moron. The music itself on this album sounds really awesome, maybe if I just bought the album, and forced myself to listen to it, I'd start to feel the vocals, I don't know.
