Municipal Waste is gonna fuck you up, dude.

No, seriously.

Richmond’s finest (yeah, that’s right – take that, Darkest Hour) are back with yet another ode to the joys of living as everyone’s favorite mythological lush would have wanted – going on what we know about Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and theater, he totally would’ve been down with the ‘Waste. A shared love of intoxicants and over-the-top stage antics would have surely fostered a helluva bond betwixt the two, but ancient Greece, this ain’t (after all, it’s pretty hard to imagine Tony Foresta prancing about with a lyre). This is 2007, and Municipal Waste’s latest album, The Art of Partying, has arrived.

There’s been a pretty steady buzz growing around this band for a few years now, bolstered by tales of their beer-soaked, high-energy, ridiculously-fun live shows (you haven’t lived until you’ve boogie-boarded face-first into the middle of a circle pit during “Thrashin’ of the Christ!”). They’ve got their fair share of detractors, but have just as many, if not many more, devoted fans. The thing about Municipal Waste is, you either hate them for ripping off your favorite bands from the short-lived crossover thrash era…or you bless their hearts for doing it so well. It’s almost redundant to trot out the list of bands that have influenced Municipal Waste’s sound; you should be able to figure it out after hearing the first five seconds of the first song on the album. You’ve got your D.R.I., your Cryptic Slaughter, your Suicidal Tendencies, your bits’n’bobs of Bay Area thrash and meaty slabs of old-school DC hardcore (gotta love those gang chants); a familiar-sounding concoction, to be sure, but they do it so damn well!

That being said, there is some room for improvement on this album. The guys rip through 15 songs in just 32 minutes; that’s not too unusual for a thrash/punk band of their ilk (and positively epic for a grindcore release!) but the constant need for speed and lack of originality casts a certain same-y pall over The Art of Partying. No two songs sound exactly the same, but some of ‘em are pretty damn close. The ‘Waste do make an effort to mix it up, throwing in a few well-placed movie samples, taking care to lay down some ridiculously heavy headbangin’ riffs straight outta ’85 (See “Headbanger Face Rip” for a perfect example) and beefing up the more metallic side of their sound. The latter move may piss off some of the crustier fans of the band (the kind who favor bandanas and Aus-Rotten shirts over long hair and leather) who have been crying that “Municipal Waste sucks now!” ever since they signed to Earache, but really, who cares? The Art of Partying sounds like a Municipal Waste record. They didn’t suddenly pull a Black Album or put out a CD of Elliot Smith covers; they unleashed a righteous, thrashtastic collection of songs about partying, wizards, explosions, epic food fights, cartoon violence, and of course, beer. It’s fast, it’s tight, it’s well-executed, and above all, it’s fucking FUN! Remember that idea, that music can be fun to listen to? Metal doesn’t have to be serious 100% of the time – sometimes it’s okay to sing about sharks and throwing food. Municipal Waste has known this from the beginning, and that’s a huge part of their appeal.

That’s the bottom line, really. If you like this band, you’ll fucking love this album. If you hate this band, well, there’s not much on here that could sway your opinion. If you’re just now hearing about them and aren’t sure if the ‘Waste is right for you or not, give this one a spin and unleash the bastards. You won’t regret it.

This album fucking rocks. I think Hazardous Mutation may be a little better because of songs like Mind Eraser, The Thrashin' of Christ, and Set To Destruct, but it's still Municipal Waste and it's still awesome. These guys definitely make the funnest music to listen to that I have in my vast collection of metal and hardcore albums. Who can deny songs about being hammered, wizards, and fuckin' food fights? I don't give a shit about these peckerheads saying they're not original and all their songs sound the same, who fuckin' cares? As long as it's fun and there's wicked riffs what's the beef? It's like a good roller-coaster, it doesn't change no matter how many times you ride it, but it's always fun.

Well, yeah, I should probably amend my statement to "Most bands I've heard from the Richmond area are hardcore influenced." I haven't heard very many, and I don't mean to give that impression. My exposure to the local bands around here is only limited to word of mouth, because I don't really have the money or the time to check the scene out myself. I'll keep those names in mind, though, and see if I can catch a show or two.

Bob MW havent played a show in Richmond in a while but I can tell you that when MW play Alley Katz ( their normal place to tear up) they always bring a great crowd. And people love them. Now as far as all of Richmonds scene being mostly hardcore influenced I cant disagree more. There is a solid cross section of bands in the Richmond area. Immortal avenger and Engage for power metal, MW for your party styled thrash, Behelmod, and war torn ( who changed their name just cant remember to what, Saint Diablo for the nu metal stuff, Southern Vein, Bullistic, Alabama thunder pussy for more southern rock, Separation, Battlemaster,..... yes there are the metalcore " hardcore" bands out there like cassius, this time its war thousand yard stare and others but they arnt all richmond has to offer trust me. There are several bands I didnt list. You just need to know where to look and who to talk to.

I'd like to throw in that the Virginia/DC thing isn't so much of a screwup, considering that's only like, an hour and a half difference. Not to mention, no one is really "from" DC.

I love this band... I mean I`m sorry if they`re not getting any local support but it seems the rest of the world is loving them just now. Richmond`s loss. Saw them at Wacken the other week, they were almost certainly the band of the weekend.

No, Jay. Speak English or Die came out about two years before both albums you named. You might be thinking of "Dealing with it", no? As for MW, no thanks. Having grown up with the originals it's just too hard for me to accept and enjoy such an unoriginal approach. There's homage with a slight injection of yourself giving the product a modest sense of identity, and then there's complete thievery glossed up with a more modern day sounding production. MW fall within the latter, and I'm just not okay with that.

@Doug: Just threw Anthrax out there because Guardrail seems to take a that classic rap/thrash approach to the vocals. I don't know Vio-lence, but knowing Robb Flynn I can imagine where you're coming from. I guess my time would be better spent checking out Vio-lence than MW, huh?

Apparently, Darkest Hour are from Washington, DC, not Richmond; my bad. I believe it was Tony Foresta himself that mentioned Darkest Hour to me as one of the bands from the Richmond area, but it seems that he and I were both wrong. I obviously am no fan of the band, but I was indeed mistaken about their origin (must've gotten them confused with Lamb of God) so I apologize for the error.

this album is all image and no substance... it's supposed to be old school and fun, but doesn't deliver the goods, in my opinion. every song sounds the same, and it doesn't matter what the lyrics are about, since the vocals show no personality or emotion to the effect of the lyrics. the guitar riffs aren't well thought out- sounds like they recorded the first thing they strummed out. the previous album had a bit more punch to it. if you have that, skip this.

so where is the discern when it comes to writing a review and then editing it for content? that bit about darkest hour "district divided" being from virginia should have be caught the first go around. not that it really effects the quality of the review, but it does make me question the knowledge of the source. oh wait i guess it does then.

I live here. I talk to tons of people that fancy themselves metalheads, because they listen to local metal bands. I haven't heard anyone talking about Municipal Waste. Unless all of Richmond's metalheads showed up at the GW/DC concert, I'm pretty sure I know what the fuck I'm talking about more than you do. ...And then you're going to wave your proverbial metal cock at me? The fact that you didn't actually mention owning a tech death album (which was 50% of the subgenres you bashed and just claimed to like) aside, does it even look like I give a shit if you own 2,500+ albums? I don't care what you do or what you listen to. No one was talking about DM or BM until you brought it up, what the fuck does it have to do with MW? People complained about the album, you brought up irrelevant subgenres and made excuses as to why the music is how it is. Trying to claim "I know more about metal than you do" is fucking hilarious. This isn't math class, moron, this is a qualitative issue. You can't "know" more than anyone about shit like this. I bash bands all the time, including shitty necro BM bands. See: Countess, Xasthur. But if you thought your pathetic comments got me all pissy, keep trying. Its not the subject, its the fact that you're spouting stupid shit. I don't care if this band is awesome and BM and DM suck, your defense of MW is ridiculous. "christ do people dissect music waaayyyy too much." Here you're criticizing people for taking the quality of the music that they spend their free time listening to too seriously. Expectations are for fascists, eh? "MW aren't trying to reivente the wheel." No, but they are trying to make an album worth listening to. Worth listening to includes whether or not it comes too close to something better someone could listen to. "They're just a bunch of drunk metal-punks that like to party and thrash." Oh, so people should keep in mind what the musicians like to do, and their level of serious intent? ...Clue me in to how that has any fucking thing to do with how the CD sounds. If anything, this is a reason why the CD is viewed as mediocre. "They write catchy songs and put on a fun live show where people actually smile and have a good time." Pop is catchy too, but we aren't giving that any credit here, are we? And, again, clue me into where the live presence has any fucking affect on what's on the CD. This isn't a review of their live show, fuckface, this is a review of the album. "If you don't like it, pass on it and go and listen to whatever makes you happy whithou shitting on what other people like. I couldn't give a fuck what shitty necro black metal or br00tal tech DM people listen to; if they like it more power to them." Okay, even if we suppose that this isn't a reviewing site, and opinions aren't supposed to be thrown around (and that it would be hard to determine what bands are good if the only existing comments on any band in existence would be "I dig it"), you responded with an even more unreasonable bunch of criticism than anyone who remarked on MW. How about this: shitting on things should be limited to bands, rather than entire subgenres, considering its much more reasonable to sit down with 40-60 minutes of music and formulate an opinion on its quality than it is to canvas an entire subgenre. "Sadly the internet gives people a forum to express their opinions and every asshole thinks they are righté" And here you shit on everybody for doing the same fucking thing you're doing. Not to mention, if you consider a forum for everyone to express their opinion "sad," I consider you a fucking enemy. What you're saying there is "Sadly, people on the internet are allowed to disagree with me." So here's another opinion from an asshole that thinks he's right for you: I think your kneecaps should spontaneously shatter just for typing that. I don't care if you weren't attacking me at all. I recognize retards, I spotted one, and I pointed it the fuck out.

Bob: I wasn't attacking you aside from that first line. Funny cause I live 15 hours away from Richmond but when I went there this summer people were going off to GW & DC when I saw them live and everybody was asking MW to play as well but some members weren't around, so I don't see how people in their own city don't support them. Maybe it's just the people in your crowd. Maybe my choice of words wasn't the best but that's how the most of the people react to the band they don't like in the lashes and they always think their word is gold. Unlike many I don't spend time bashing bands I don't like, I prefer to use that time listening to band I do like. Oh and btw I've spent the past 10 years working in an indie record store that thrives on metal and I'm the person that does all the buying. In that time I've learned to respect peoples musical choices even if I don't enjoy them myself. I'm pretty sure you bash alot of bands on here, did I hurt your feelings when I said shitty-necro BM. Yes much like the thousands of shitty metalcore bands, there are tons of shitty trash, black, death, punk, hc, rock, stoner, doom, sludge bands out there as well. So believe me, I probably know more about metal than you and if I hated BM & DM so much how come I have records by bands like Enslaved, Craft, Emperor, Leviathan, Darkthrone, Behemoth, Nile, Akercoke, etc in my 2500+ collection. Sorry to burst your bubble big guy.

So, it's not just bands like Arsis (who own) and LOG. IT's too bad there's no local support there.... At any rate, enjoyed this album. Looking forward to seeing them on tour.

Dwep - Sorry I don't dig the local scene around here? Its way too hardcore influenced. Otherwise its just thrash, which I'm not terribly fond of, but it is better than the -core, but like I said, these guys've got shit local support, as well as those other fuckers you mentioned. I mean, I'm off listening to whatever makes me happy, but apparently that's not enough? Please elaborate on the hidden clause that made your affinity for mediocre local metal a prerequisite for me. But oh, do explain to us how "drunk metal-punks" differs from any other shitface in a metal band, eh? Also, you're expressing your opinion on the internet. So you're an asshole. Who thinks he's right. Congratulations, dumbfuck. Not to mention, someone shat on an album, so you shat on two major subgenres that you clearly don't follow? Wow. At least these fucks listened to MW without being biased against thrash. Here's a clue: you're on a reviewing site. Where people give their opinions of albums. If you don't want to read anybody else's opinions on albums, don't come here.
