Album Review

After exploding onto the scene in 2000, Virginia's Lamb of God finally return to the fray with one of the most anticipated albums of the year, As the Palaces Burn. Last time around Lamb pummeled the metal faithful with a furious drum-driven assault that came off as an extreme Pantera. I always enjoyed New American Gospel, but I felt like it could've been a masterpiece if they had cut back on the percussion. Apparently they listened. This time they've relaxed the drumming, emphasized the string-work, and delivered a vicious hybrid of Swedish thrash, metalcore, and Southern-fried groove.

The rumor around the cyber-grapevine is that Prosthetic sent out a bunch of un-mastered copies of the album for review. At least on the version I have, the production is pretty sterile, but it's nothing a band would be ashamed to release. The guitar tone has bite but isn't too crushing. Everything is pretty clear in the mix, but nothing really brings any punch, although the breakdowns have that Unearth-like quality of sounding like 5 guitars smashing synchronously. But with Devin Townsend behind the board, we've come to expect great things, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the un-mastered version. Randy has evolved his vocals, developing more of a snarled bark as opposed to his old scream (which still shows up here and there). Lamb of God is one of the tightest acts out there, and they back it up in the live setting. I recommend to everyone that you check them out in person next time they play in your area. Their material is fast, technical and intense, and every time I've seen them they’ve pulled it off with crushing precision.

Ruin kicks off this riff-fest with a Testament-styled flair before switching gears slightly into a Swedish mode with riffs The Haunted should be playing. At 2:40 the song flies off the handle with a spastic, neck-snapping mosher. I've seen this song performed live and the pit just went into a foking frenzy. Purified starts off by reminding the young'uns out there that Slayer was doing this thing years back. The song has a Shadows Fall vibe running through it, although I suspect that this is the album everyone wanted SF to put out. (No offense to the boys in SF, The Art of Balance was my #6 last year). 11th Hour was released to the public last month, so a lot of you have probably heard it, but that doesn't detract from the fact that the song is supreme. More Testament influence shows up here (tell me that the beginning doesn't sound like Riding the Snake). Then just listen to the part at 2:15 where an urgent Gothenburg riff leads into another brutal breakdown that puts my home state of Massachusetts to shame. Guitar chirps and squeals add to the godliness of this song. A Devil in God's Country is more plodding with Randy waxing poetic ("One man's paradise is another man's living Hell") in one of the stronger vocal performances.

There's really nothing more to say. Lamb of God has produced one of the best albums of 2003, one that should set the metal world ablaze. Any fan of modern metal in general should find something to like here. Production mysteries aside, this is a fantastic album, and it's nice to see bands realize that you can write sick music with just the basics. No synths, no keys, no operatic fem vox, no samples, no bullsh*t - just balls-out, Pure American Metal!

What a year 2003 was! You had albums like COB - Hate Crew Deathroll, Arch Enemy Anthems of Rebellion then you had this beast. What I like about this group is their no-bullshit approach to heavy metal. These guys walk into a studio, or on stage with the intention of kicking your ass. The production is not particulary stellar however it makes the band sound honest. The songs are made up different concepts bridged together by odd groove patterns and vicious drum assaults. Lamb of God are bonded together more tightly then a pair of atomic compounds. I rate this a 4.5/6/6

maybe a bit overrated (not saying they're bad, i own the first 3 albums), but an original band, and that deserves allot of credit.

OVERRATED!!! Not saying their bad, but saying that they are the best band out there is ridiculous. Sacrament was decent, AOTW was pretty good, NAG is probably their best and this is alright. Like I said, they're not a bad band, but they are overrated.

no doubt reminscent of 80's thrash but their shit is all over the place so it sounds "harder" as some of you would say. there are deffinetly some brutal riffs here and some (big surprise) very excellent songwritting, Bootscraper and A devil in gods' country are the true gems of this CD.

face it for your malice is a waste of a song. and randys spoken intros never work, except for laid to rest when he keeps it to a minimum. NAG is easily the better album. but damn if 11th hour isnt an extremely excellent piece of music.

This CD is a good starting point for those getting into Lamb of God. Ashes of the Wake just kinda seemed to lack some aggresion that this CD held. New American Gospel is much more raw than this(especially in the vocals, Randy sounds really pissed) and the drums standout much more, and the guitars are more buzzsawish, so if your looking for pure, no frills aggresion go with NAG. But if your looking for more techniacl guitar work and a more.... thrashy sound, you should pick this one up.

As i lay on my bed i push the play button on my remote and get sucked into a black, swirling vortex of unimaginable horrors. I cannot decifer fact form fiction and am transported into an alternate universe. Then my mom calls for supper and I crap myself. Such is Lamb Of God. It kichs of with the song Ruin which by the way is totally kick ass, and seemlessley transitions into the next song, as the palaces burn, through a deep, black twisted sound. This cd rocks. The 11th hour blew my mind with some mind numbing ruffs that one cannot help but head bang to. the rythm in that song is amazing. this is pure METAL at its best and this is a cd that should not be missed.

I dispise the use of the word "gay" to rip bands apart. Now that's becoming quite redundant. Like it or don't like it, but let us rip bands apart with at least a little bit of maturity and taste.

Maybe I was a little enthusiastic when rating this album's production, I'd probably downgrade the production a point if we could do that, but I don't think it's a bad job. Pretty fitting for the music, which is quite different than the style heard on NAG.

Holey krap Diesel! This disastrous production got a 5 and the new Divine Empire, w/ a thick, tight, and clear sound got a 3.5 ??? Trade those radio shack speakers in for something halfway modern!

this stuff kicks ass. I dont know which album i love more, this or new american gospel, they both have their own sound definately. I loved the completely un-coherent vocal style on new american gospel, but I like the new style as well. the drums on this album rule(for example- the monster fill in "Ruin"). this rules

Lamb of God have indeffinanlty put out a blazing album, ranging from their ever-bludgeoning double kick drumming to great guitar playing. This album shows that the older style of metal is not dead!! great album, i love it.

This is a release that brings back memories to my early days in metal-- 80's thrash. This cd kicks ass. The production, eventhough not the best fits perfectly for the feel of the cd. Testament was one of my favorites bands years ago so this cd was an awesome listen for me. This album is so different then their first but I like that; versatility. Good album

I've heard 'Ruin' and '11th Hour', both of which got me excited about this disc. I love the music, and am pleased with the more thrashlike sound of the vocals as I wasn't a huge fan of the vocals on 'New American Gospel'. Good stuff.
