Album Review

Score 9.4

About three years ago on another website, I stated if I ever hear a Mithras album worth owning long-term, I’d be one of the first to give the devils their due, so here we go. Despite being less than blown away by their previous two albums, Forever Advancing…Legions and Worlds Beyond The Veil, there was never any denying the raw talent of this remarkable UK duo. With the conceptual Behind The Shadows Lie Madness, their third proper full-length, Mithras not only continue to impress with their technical excellence, but they’ve upped the ante when it comes to killer death metal songwriting compared to their own past works, and have wound up with an album that brushes past current releases by powerhouse death metal veterans such as Immolation, the returning Angelcorpse, and Vital Remains among others.

Behind The Shadows…is an almost larger-than-life death metal odyssey, and frankly, it’s an album I wish Hate Eternal would have released by now. The key here is riffs, riffs, and more riffs with just enough repetition to make them stick, adding echoing space-aged melodies which pretty much envelope everything in a resonant blanket of huge sound. Instrumental opener “The Journey And The Forsaken” is soothing for a few disarming seconds, but changes almost instantly into something you might hear during the opening credits of a supernatural South Korean horror movie, and it doesn’t take long before “To Fall From The Heavens” charges forth with a unique marching rhythm stomping along over a viciously fast, oddly-timed blast beat and a brief clean/harsh (!!!) vocal trade off that comes from out of nowhere. The leads alone deserve a paragraph just to themselves, as all the solos are played with an almost cosmic feel to them, drenched in just enough reverb and running wildly up and down the fretboard with seemingly complete abandon.

The riff that kicks in @ 0:46 during “Thrown Upon The Waves” is possibly the most beautiful riff I’ve ever heard a death metal band build a song around and still sound lethally heavy. That’s part of the magic that happens on this album, all these fantastic death metal riffs are used to their fullest potential, and rather than waste time with filler, the songs are kept to a decent length, and these rhythms are accented by the otherworldly harmonics and melodies supplied by Leon Macey. The slight enhancement used on the vocals gives Rayner Coss an almost godlike presence that only increases the depth of the compositions, and I can’t even begin to imagine what this material would sound like in a live setting if they can keep it tight. And another thing, the more I listen to it, the less it reminds me of Morbid Angel, for the counterpoint melodies that align with those punishing riffs and ethereal solos breathe with an individuality that can only be Mithras, and no other.

Possibly the most excellent part of this disc is the production, because the mix is simply immaculate and every instrument strikes with both clarity and unwavering heft. The way the solos wind through the mountains of riffs without hogging the spotlight during "The Twisted Tower", while occasionally matching and enhancing odd drum accents makes for quite a busy earful, and nothing gets lost nor overly processed in the mix. Most of the rhythms remain slower and follow a rending groove, highlighted in the nearly perfect “Under The Three Spheres”, a painfully fast, simply nihilistic piece of dynamic death metal art that throws in one of the meanest plodding segue/lead passages you’re going to find.

There are simply no weak points to Behind The Shadows Lie Madness, I’ve sat for hours trying to pick this thing apart, and just can’t find a major flaw anywhere. Not only is it executed without error, the songwriting is tight beyond belief (the blinding tremolo riffs @ 1:26 of “Into The Black Holes Of Oblivion” are sublime), and memorable enough to wake you in the middle of the night with the licks playing in your head. In all honesty, with no fanboying whatsoever, Mithras have set the standard for death metal the likes of Nile, Monstrosity (their new one is also quite commanding), and Behemoth will find very challenging to top. This is advanced, intelligent, gripping death metal every fan of the genre should own, and those scores are for real. Essential.

I don't particularly like straight up death metal and find it rather boring. This, however, is one monster of an album. This is a masterpiece metal album, and one of the finest death metal disc's I've ever heard. Recommended to all metal fans who like to think (as this is rather artistic). The riffs are immaculately executed and just layered and layered until perfection is reached. Rather than over brutalizing their music, the band spices themselves up with spacey, echoing riffs that makes the band unique and pummeling at the same.

I have a feeling this one is going to be a grower on me. The lead guitar and solos have amazed me since I got it, but the production/tone of the music might take some getting used to for me. It basically sounds like a militaristic cyborg army on the march, which basically gives it a kind of non-human sound to it, which is intriguing but I can't say I love it yet. Definitely a grower as I feel more accustomed to the songs the more I listen to em.

Purchased Worlds Beyond the Veil after reading above review, and gotta say, exceptional Death Metal. These 2 geniuses excel at their craft, and I drool in anticipation for receipt of Beyond the Shadows...in the mail. They also seem to put great focus in interesting themes when writing their DM vocals, much different than most in their genre. Great review BTW, hooked me to my new fav death metal band (w/ Dismember)

The diversity of Death Metal is envyed by other genres now! 2007 is a great landmark for DM . Me too Ithyphallic comes first and then Definitely Mithras! I keep telling people they are a band to digg in and drown in satisfying ecstasy! Drumming seem to be programmed at times! But it does not cut it short of anything but being a masterpiece! Enjoy!

Well after hearing Nile's 'Ithyphallic' I believe 'Behind The shadows Lie Madness' will see out 2007 as the best extreme metal release. Another album worthy of mention would be the new Monstrosity 'Spiritual Apocalypse'.

pretty good album, but the production kills any sense of brutality that this album might have had otherwise. Very accessible to people not into the heaviness of death metal.

Very interesting band,i always liked them because of the ambient parts and the ''Morbid Angel'' solos but now on the new album they've found their way and they will be better with every release. They are not NILE,but neither a morbid angel clone as same say,the truth is always in the middle.

"And another thing, the more I listen to it, the less it reminds me of Morbid Angel" JIM, if you listen to LOVE OF LAVA, the bonus cd on Formulas Fatal To The Flesh, i think they will remind you more and more of Morbid Angel

Fuuuuck, this album is amazing, I just started listening to the last track and I feel almost like i've been on some kind of trip. The riffs, the guitar work in general, is pure perfection to me. The arrangements seem so tight and focused and I love the sense of atmosphere that I get when I listen to the instrumentals. Definately one of the better albums i've heard this year, not to mention the best death metal I've heard this year. I was really into NIle's newest album and I'm a big fan of behemoth and as I've been listenig to this album I feel like there is so much more in store for this band that other bands like behemoth and nile are not going to achieve.

I've had this disc for a couple weeks now. Very talented band with amazing lead guitar work. I do think the production is a little too synthetic sounding (especially the drums), but this is still a solid album..... .....And vag is correct in saying that INFESTATION was a killer U.K. death metal band. They broke up with most of the members going on to form CORPSING while the vocalist joined PUTREFY. Both bands are also worth checking out.

Who ever is interested in good British death metal should also check Infestation and their first and only record "Mass Immolation". That record easily slays the entire Deicide discography or the latest Vital Remains. Imagine something between old days Deicide and Incantation with the cryptopsy's energy.

people seemed to be loving or hating the previous album- i thought it was awesome. really creative, but not listening for every day. nevertheless, i'm definitely getting this asap. i do hope there's maybe a bit more variety than the last album, though- it's definitely hard to discriminate the tracks on WBTV.
