Having never heard of this band before, I took it upon myself to do some research on Approached by a God. An hour and a whole lot of completely unrelated links later, I’ve managed to find out that these guys are Canadian, got together in 2004, had some line-up issues, and this is their first demo. So basically, I’m winging it.
Just about anytime a Canadian upstart comes across my desk I am greeted by an onslaught of technical guitar wizardry and blasts aplenty, however Approached by a God take a simpler, more melodic approach to their brand of death metal. That’s not to say they can’t handle their instruments, as opener “Urban Apocalypse” and its opening salvo immediately proves that they can, via tight thrash riffing littered with pinch harmonics and some Maiden-esque galloping. “Find Your Daughter Before She Gets Killed” follows with more thrashy riffing although it has a lot more hefty death metal presence. “Deleted Scene” is one the most energetic tracks herein with its quick picking patterns and bouncy, melodic feel. “Cut Yourself” which has a lot of traditional metal going on in its galloping rhythms and dual leads closes out the brief demo.
As with most demo material, there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of finding a distinct sound to work with as well as tightening the screws on the performances and securing a better production job. All in all this a slightly above average demo from a young group that shows a decent amount of potential.
