Album Review

Score 9.3

It finally happened. With as much experience as I’ve had with extreme metal, with as many bands as I’ve heard and as many albums I own, I’ve finally found a release that puts my ability to relate the listening experience in extreme doubt.

I’ve heard plenty of avantgarde bands, but much of the music stagnates into the same basic formula which is of course completely counterintuitive to the whole movement, yet with The End Records' debut album from Montreal’s Unexpect, In a Flesh Aquarium is poised not only to completely redefine the boundaries of what is considering permissible as extreme, but that of avantgarde itself. However regrettable it may be, I have to admit that this is such a seriously challenging listen that it will undoubtedly be lost to a large majority of people. If you like your extreme metal cut and dry with little derivations from the norm there is absolutely no way this will appeal to you more than appreciating the level of sheer audacity this release reaches.

The maniacal blend of technical death metal, disturbed symphonic black metal, and the definitive pomp and circumstance of avantgarde takes Unexpect into areas both familiar but simultaneously alien with the calamitous juxtaposition and unbelievably layered polyphony of reaching levels of sheer insanity. Controlled chaos doesn’t explain the half of the sheer genius displayed by this seven-piece outfit.

At its very heart, Unexpect utilizes a carnival-esque calamity not too dissimilar from the cabaret of Arcturus resulting in a peculiarly twisted sound of metalheads gone Cirque D’Soleil and then expanded upon the foundation with the same sporadic madness of a band like Fantomas. Boiling under the surface is carefully operatic flourishes extremely reminiscent of Peccatum before exploding in a rage of proficient black metal garnished in the wake of post-Anthems Emperor. Believe it or not they’re not done yet. The final crucial interplay of hinges upon Unexpect’s ability to meaningfully incorporate and capture the churning dissonance of a band like Gorguts or perhaps even Cryptopsy and blend it together with the technical escapades of a band like Into the Moat or The Dillinger Escape Plan, but somehow amidst all the cacophony with what should sound like atonal noise undergoes a carefull metamorphasis into an amazingly imposing and intensely beautiful schizophrenic album.

Almost every track is a distinguished mindfuck unto itself be it from the phenomenal unbridled calamity of the piano driven “Chromatic Chimera”, the jarring twists and turns of “Summoning Senses”, or the melodramatic violins of “Megalomaniac Trees”. Be it the intensity of “Feasting Fools” or the absurdist extravagance of “Desert Urbania” or the grandiose finale, “Psychic Juggler” capping off the album in a flurry of absolutely off the wall extravagance perfectly capturing the absurdity of Pink Floyds' “The Trial”

The only weak moment of the album is the largely industrialized ambiance of
“Silence_011010701” which results in a rather standoffish track, quite separate from the preceeding material. Though it doesn’t detract from the listening experience, the songs sounds like filler really never adding much to the album as a whole. The only other break from order, the slow, brooding “The Shiver: A Clown's Mindtrap’” offers a dark, well needed respite of keyboard laden beauty and euphonious female vocals tredding more along the territory of Antimatter or The Gathering, but the whole affair reminds me of a surprising derivation towards Star of Ash. Regardless, the dull moments are nonexistent and sub par sections are so few as to be unnoticeable.

Rarely do I get this excited, but this is easily the most compelling and capricious album of the year; In a Flesh Aquarium is a testament to true brilliance. I was floored the first time I heard this album, incapable of much more than slack-jawed awe and amazement, In a Flesh Aquarium takes repeated, detailed listens to fully comprehend. Canada has done it again.

Very good review - it very accurately describes Unexpect's sound (well, as accurate as words can be anyway). I gave this one a spin after I heard a track on a sampler cd and was pretty much blown away. The thing that amazes me the most is that despite all the chaos I never felt like the songs were just randomly thrown together parts - it all feels pretty well planned out as there is almost always at least one instrument carrying the piece from one section to the next. I wonder how this sound carries over to the live stage...

I agree with Forest. A massive disadvantage to avant garde and indeed all experimental genres is the inability to tie all the influences down to one focal point and have piece flow cohesively from beginning to end without sounding disjointed. Unexpect absolutely mastered that challenge with this release, which can not really be said for their debut _we, Invaders and I fear may be true of the upcoming "Fables of the Sleepless Empire" based on the single they have released. Unfortunately this band has been rocked by constant lineup changes, so if my speculation proves true this release may be the only time we can experience Unexpect in such a cohesive form. Also, to answer your question I have heard their live shows are absolutely brilliant and the recordings are an inadequate representation of their true work which is a blending of the aural and visual arts. The self-made comparison of "Cirque du Soleil goes black metal amidst an acid-trip version of The Dark Crystal" is as much a reference to the music as it is their performance. I will be traveling to Canada next summer with the focal point of the trip being an Unexpect concert so I will report back with first-hand knowledge.

Wow, this album is simply beyond insanity. I keep listening to it every day now, and I never get tired of it. Haven't heard anything like it since Ebonylake's "On the Eve...". Amazing.

A surprise. For me being impressed has become more difficult with age (35). Last time I became floored was DragonForce and then the new Iron Maiden record. Now it's Unexpect - In A Flesh Aquarium. No wonder Ihsahn is a big fan of Unexpect. I expected he would be, after I first heard this. It's 'kin brilliant! But insanity is lurking around the corner if I listen too extensively. :) Just like DragonForce last album Inhuman Rampage I hope In A Flesh Aquarium is the album that will lead to a major break-through for Unexpect. They surely deserve it.

@ Jeremy w/MR Fortunatly, with this one, the chaos is quite well entertaining. Listening to just one song is not enough. The songs are complementary, as the musicians are, which wasn't so much the case with We, The Invader. Likely, the extra time the new and old members had to play together made a difference. And it is totally original, but full of having heard before influences. Their feat is to have succeed in making all of those influences their own by giving them the Unexpect's personality. Quite unexpected....

@Zaibach Why do you hate me ?? Because me and my brother were signing the whole ''Lion King'' soundtrack while listening to it, dead drunk in the morning at this girls house years ago and that wasn't metal ?? c'mon... :)

I didn't find this album really all that challenging to listen to... it might be because I've got a lot of "extreme" metal littered about my hard drive. I found Croatoan to be a lot tougher of a listen. This album is awesome, very Patton-esque, reminds me of what I thought the first time I heard Disco Volante back in the day. Definitely pick this up.

@Mathieu: It's not that it's necessary to have such an eclectic mix of influences to be found original, but it is a sure fire way to be considered so. I Consider something like Agalloch to be wildly original yet they're skill is not in a maelstorm of chaos.

I still wonder where they are going. I wrote a praising review for their first album here some weeks before and I thereafter post that their follow up, We... The Invader was lackluster to me. I must admit that this former EP is somehow more appreciated, but I still think it is a step backward. I just heard one album from their new album, on The End website, and the jazz element I just frustrating. Did they want to make an Ephel Duath's Painter's Pallette record?? Now, it is certainly better than that useless noisy thing, but still.... Well, at least they are recognized. But is it necessary to make a cahotic melting pot of music to be found original???

This album reminds me of that movie Lost In Translation where Bill Murray plays a serious role with that hot piece Scarlett Johansson, and everybody starts raving about what a sensory mindfuck it was to watch Bill Murray step "outside the box" and take on a serious role, it was the greatest thing to hit '03, so I watched it with an open, spread-eagle, mind only to realize that the pungent smell liingering during the opening credits was in fact a festering turd. Maybe I'm one of those cut and dry people with my Exxxxxxxxtreme metal, and maybe my listening skills are seriously challenged, but I'll take my Ernie McCracken metal over this anytime.

So, I got to listen to their album, not my bag, good musician for sure, good speed while while staying precise.. still not what I dig for sound and song writing.. call me picky, but I don't like that album. Still they're in the top of our metal scene these days. I remember when I saw them live 1 or 2 times opening for Cryptopsy on And then you'll beg tour, they were good, but nothing like now. @Topper , It's not because the bassist plays a 9 strings, its him, I used to chat with that guy on Undernet, a lot.. and we were always in disagreement over everything :D

I've got a few songs from their fist release, an EP was it? Anyway at first I was like wtf, these guys don't really know what style to play so they're all over the fuckin place. Then after a couple more listens I really grew to love the spastic structures and embraced the ridiculous sound they've made for themselves. Gonna have to get this one asap, good review.

I heard one song on their myspace and I'm not really sure what I think of this yet. Its definately different and has its moments but not really sure if I like it as a whole especially since I'm not a fan of black metal nevermind the symphonic type. Either way these guys are definately amazing musicians. I mean their bassist is playing a 9 string bass! http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=10455799&imageID=929785804&MyToken=e5fd471a-fc64-4980-aa8c-854d3bc1a9f9 Take a look at that shit!
