Synopsis: The 20 year old Canadian love child of 3 Inches of Blood, Between the Buried and Me and Thursday...

Review: Get yer lashing hats on folks, ‘cos this album is going to be one polarizing motherfucker. On one side (where I reside) will be the folks that view this group of young upstarts as emo’s version of Decapitated; a ridiculously talented group of kids that formed at 14 years of age and now are outshining most, if not all of their peers with only their first full length offering. On the other hand, the genre snobs and emo haters that will, by virtue of the band's emo/core tag will simply hate this record no matter how good it is and view these young Canucks as pretentious pop stars.

So let me explain my stand; this album fucking smokes, no if's and's or but's about it. If you like technically proficient metal that combines the some old school traditional metal stylings (3 Inches of Blood), progressive metalcore (BtBaM), and infectious, poppy emo (Thursday), you will like Kezia. First, the guitar world is silly good. With more than a nod to Iron Maiden crossed with Paul Waggoner (BtBaM), sheathed in tightly wound heavy metal and thrash structures, Tim Millar and Luke Hoskin, like Decapitated’s Vogg, belies their youth with outlandish skill and flair. Second, the song writing is downright illegally catchy. And I don’t mean three chord verse/chorus/verse catchy, I mean ‘holy fuck that riff was cool, let me rewind that’ catchy. And folks each of the 10 tracks on Kezia has many such moments.

Now the other side of the fence is going to hate the almost power metal croon of Rody Walker, especially if you hate Coheed and Cambria’s vocals. You are also going to hate the overall emo image, lyrical themes and innate youthful pretentiousness that PtH imbue, but if you are going to ignore this stellar record because of an image or genre tag, you deserved to be repeatedly raped by Chris Barnes.

For those still reading my incessant drivel, like I said earlier, all 10 tracks are simply brilliant exercises in complex yet catchy music, that show a band can transcend genres with ease if they choose to do so. I defy any metal head not to bang their head to the opening stanzas of “No Stars Over Bethlehem”, “Bury the Hatchet” or “Nautical”, Shadows Fall could not do it any better. There’s even a few token growls and screams to make you feel more masculine. Then for you true emo types there’s plenty of soaring, synth laced heartfelt moments (“Heretics and Killers”, “Divinity Within”, “A Plateful of Our Dead”) including a very cool, female vocal climax in the epic “Blindfolds Aside” that reminded me of “Short Stories With Tragic Endings” by From Autumn to Ashes ("The Divine Suicide of K.” and “She Who Mars the Skins of Gods” also feature some nice female vocal segues) . PTH even flash some dazzling Euro-core harmonies and solos that put far sturdier metalcore bands like All That Remains and Killswitch Engage to shame (“She Who Mars the Skins of Gods”, “Turn Soonest to the Sea”, “The Divine Suicide of K.”). Plainly put, there is something for everyone here, but I imagine the vocals will be the sticking point for most of you hesitant to step outside of your death metal box. For me personally, they complement and become part of the whole. I listen to A LOT of albums in my writing gigs, and Kezia is getting lots and lots of repeats in my ipod and is certain to be on my end of year list - regardless of genre. Only a slightly inaudible bass stops this album from getting a prefect score.

This is a truly brilliant young band that is going to be hard pressed to outdo this phenomenal debut.

I agree in all aspects. This album displays many different aspects of music that many people will find appealing. I personally picked this up after listening to The Black Dhalia Murder for about a month straight. When i first started to listen to it, i thought oh shit im going emo; but as one delves deeper into the album, they find it cannot be labeled by merely one genre-tag. The bass being inaudible is a downside to the whole album but too much bass can be a bad thing as well. The music of this album is very smooth, and I mean that there aren't any harsh sounding. or turn-off, moments in the album. Also, this album offers a story intertwined within the lyrics, similar to Green Day's American Idiot Album. This story gives much more backbone to the music and ultimately thrusts the emotion of the musicians into their music, which is then thrust into the listener. I have to say that this is one of the best, well made, and well written albums I have ever come across.

I gotta highly disagree with the last poster, but it is opinion afterall. What gets me the most about these guys... they're so damn young, but yet they manage to not only write technically proficient songs, but they do so in a progressive song structure ala Rush, BTBAM, or Candiria. If you've ever tried to write a song that ventured out from the verse/chorus/verse/bridge/solo/breakdown/chorus structure (and all the small variants), you'll know writing a song that progresses from point A to point B is not easy.

there are great guitars that will blow your head off but i just cant bring myself to agree to the review. i hate to use a clique but every song sounds the same. and dont fool yourself. this is not metal!ther are alot of wining vocals that remind me of The Agonists or AFI. i did however find that I liked some of the stuff on this cd and me being a fan of hevier "metalcore" made me take some time before i was able to admit that. overall i think its good for a few kicks and nothing else. if you listen to REAL metal then this will be nothing more then a weekend guilty pleasure. overrated...

The new song they have on their myspace called Sequoia Tree is fucking fantastic. It sounds like they've incoprorated a small amount of 70's prog and more gritty guitar tones ala Mastodon. The end breakdown of Sequoia Tree contains a lick that's so oldschool Megadeth it gave me chills. These guys are fucking fantastic, and it looks like they're just getting better.

Considering this album came out exactly one week BEFORE BTBAM's "Alaska", Chris, you are a complete tool. BTBAM and PTH are my top two favorite bands, and neither has stolen riffs from the other. PTH has cited BTBAM as an influence though, but that is completely different.

so if a bassist writes the lyrics, the singer is a tool, but if a singer writes a guitar line it's accepted that the guitarist is a genius? voice is an instrument, lyrics are not an instrument, douche

i personally hate this album. I've been listening to this band for years, and at one point were my favourite band. But i just don't like their new sound. also, once the lead riff kicks in on "turn soonest to the sea", complete rip off from BTBAM alaska. compare the two songs, and you'll see what i mean. i also don't like the fact their bassist writes all their lyrics, it makes rody look like a tool. The song writings good, but it's just not for me.

Not to sound like an ass Chris but I thought the album was about a Priest, a guard and a girl named Kezia. Either way this is an amazing album, not emo but not the farthest thing from emo either since the vocals are leaning towards that direction. Protest the Hero is definitely like a Between the Buried and Me if you replaced their death metal influences with punk and better songwriting.

Did you even understand that concept of the album? Its a story about the killing of god, and the execution of the savior of the earth. I think these comment things are stupid. I have lots of friends who hate this album, and every time i play it they're like, "what the hell? who let him pick this song??" and yet, i find it ironic that this album is present in all of their iPods and/or cd cases. This cd is incredible - its just that everybody keeps seeing it only for its surface - which brings me to the story. I think the story is incredible on this album; it's phenomenal. If you're in for a hell of a ride, then get listenin' to this fucking cd. I can't find hardly any of my favorite bands that, like Protest the Hero, just throw in little guitar pitches here and there, in the most random of places and yet it makes the song linear; it is incredibly rapid, yet also paced. Kezia has intense moments all throughout the entire cd - its more of an experience than a cd. Any fan of emo, screamo/punk, alternative, metal or ANYTHING RELATED: PLEASE CHECK THESE GUYS OUT. Honestly, I think you'll find yourself in for a treat.

76 listens to this album (probably well over 100, I'm just going by my iTunes playcount) and this album is still fucking killer. I mean it. I know it came out in 2005 in Canada, but us Americanos didn't get it until April of this year, and this is my absolutel runaway number 1 album this year. It might not have the insanity UneXpect has, it might not be as brutal as Starkweather, but this has by far the most potent, lasting, and fucking amazing songwriting I've heard this year. Kezia is a goddamned clinic in songwriting. It peaks when it should, they can sustain energy, they've got plenty of creative parts interspersed that really make you stop and rewind to hear it pulled off. The hooks are plentiful and they're fucking lucious in intensity, dripping with pure fucking passion and executed with microscopic precision. After a few listens not only do I not mind the singer, I wholly enjoy his wailing. It's a break from cookie monster rabbling, mock banshee wails, and just stupid fucking neanderthal grunting that seems to populate the metal arena these days. Also, re-reading the initial lashes, I'm quite glad Dragonforce fans didn't enjoy this album. Fuck, if that's not a glowing recommendation to people who like music instead of a bunch of Malmsteen worshippers who have learned to play with raging hardons, positively astounded and horny by how fucking awesome they are, then I don't know what is.

Musicianship is stellar...and then finally the vocals meshed together with everything...because of that this was a bit of a grower for me. JRX--good call with the Candiria comparison. Allthough the 2 bands are quite different the stucture is alike. To know Candiria is to recognize amazing songwriting and musicianship. That is what turned me on to Protest the Hero. Any metal band capable of adding jazz elements has undeniable talent.

Take a large portion of The Fall of Troy, add some Mars Volta-esque vocal wailings, a healthy dose of tech metal chug, song structures similar to Candiria, and top it all off with jazz-styled blast beats? Fucking shit I don't even know what to think of these guys. Despite what people say, they have no commercial viability whatsoever on anything but late-night sunday rock shows (Believe me, I've got a fair share of my library dedicated to "mainstream crap" as well as all the "real music" *rolls eyes*) and they also don't hit the right chords with a lot of the metal crowds. I don't know, anybody who writes these guys off as crap simply doesn't know music. Their style may not be to your liking, but doubting their ability (at what? 21?) and talent is a goddamned atrocity, and since true metalheads revere their musical royalty quite a bit on how well they know their instruments it also makes all of you haters hypocrites as well. Can't ever satisfy a metalhead who's more concerned about appearing to be "elite". The minute you give them what they want, they don't want it anymore (most likely on the fact that someone else might like it too, and that just shits all over their cred).

At first I said the same things that the haters are saying.... I hate it... If I wanted to be sad I'd listen to AFI's new CD... That kinda shit. But after a good 10 times of listening to the whole album and reading along with the lyrics I definetly enjoy it a whole lot more. The Group vocals are few and far between so its not a typical 'punk' or 'hardcore' vibe. Great Guitars and the lyrics are pretty cool. Its been a while since I got a CD that actually had a concept... the last Iced Earth I think... Anyway, PETA sucks and PTH kicks ass. Give it a good listen and make up your own mind. The main issue with the production is it's totally inconsistant. The bass comes in and out, the vocals are different in every song, the guitars sometimes sound hollow, the kick drum is often much too loud in the mix. This producer fails.

I dont like the vox, but i do love all kinds of singers from Ella fitz, duke ellington to neil young, early and late incubus etc. Although i still think this guy is whiny; not my cup of tea. I cant believe the production got more then a 2. THe drums sound like ice cream pails, and the bass is non-existant, like the rest of the record the guitars are sounding much better then anything else, and the vocals if you like them.

how is it u folks hate clean vocals, how is it u hate anything thats musical, i mean dont get me wrong, i listen to undergroud stuff that take these bands most of you are talking about and wipe their asses with them, heavyist shit ever, but when i'm in the mood i like other stuff to, like led zepplin. great stuff, what about when i want to relaxe and rest, i need something softer, another thing, i listen to music almost 24-7, i cant listen to the same type of music all the time, i need to change it up sometimes, with that said though my favorit is still grindcore, and hardcore,

EXACTLY ..The point is that if you don't like this what is the point of bashing it. Even if you gave it a fair chance. and if you are quick to judge after hearing 45 sec and hate it thats fine, its probabably not for you anyway. I love Nile and Canibal Corpse more than this stuff . I just feel that some people are totally avoiding the fact that the talent is evident for bullshit reasons.

Well I hate this, so I guess that means I'm some Cannibal Corpse-obsessed meathead who lives in his mom's basement, is a closet homosexual, and would never admit to liking anything with clean vocals so as to always appear "tr00" and "kvlt" etc etc. Or maybe, just maybe, this band is not very good.

People would be going APE - SHIT over these guys if the clean vocal thing wasn't being tagged so quickly as "emo". You think this is emo you are a fucking moron. As soon as people found out that these were young musicains and maybe...just maybe judged by thier appearence, respect was lost. Its fresh to hear clean vocal ability with some stunning musicianship. I hear old and new here. This isn't something I can listen to very frequently...I gotta warm up to the vocals..I lilke this. I am amazed by the supidity. Some folks just can't post a negative opinion without sounding like a fuckhead.

I think the vocalist of Dragonforce is a pretty damn fine singer. Ya power metal vocals are horrendous but I found his vocals to be genuine and true to the absolutely shredding and technical prowess of Dragonforce's music. What amazes me is that Bruce Dickinson has those same kind of vocals, shit he INVENTED them practically in that type of metal, but no one slams him for it. I think it amazing that Metal Review can review Tool and NIN which is NOT metal and totally bypass or not review a band like Dragon Force whats the deal with that? Seems like this site gets more emo/hardcore albums to review at the drop of a hat more so then any other type of release.

Most of us feel uncomfortable about homosexuality because of the assumed feminine aspects. But most men also like women.....who are feminine. So if you hate fags that means you also hate women....which makes YOU a fag. HA!

Any level headed straight man I know does not hate homosexuals, and I'm an old-ass metal head. Buy yeah, I just got this one the other day...very good by any musical standards.

And I hate to say it, but most of you trying to make others listen to "real" metal sound like you're trying too hard to be accepted by other metalheads just like you. You all act big and bad like you live your life true to some unwritten br00tal metal code and sneer down at the rest of us. The people on this site whom I've come to listen to the most are the ones willing to give soemthing different a listen and aren't too stuck up their own asses to consider anyone that doesn't conform to any specific metalhead sterotype gay. You're all just a bunch of homophobic morons.

Disclaimer: I like emo tinged music and am bi, so any reference to me being a fag are always half true and I have no qualm about sucking you off (If I believed anyone on this site would actually look good). So I'll say it for you: I'm a fag. Sounds like an awesome album, haven't checked them out yet though. Although I have to question the comparison between All That Remains and KsE. Those two bands sound nothing alike, nor do I think any other metalcorish band will ever come close to All That Remains in any category. Shadows Fall can't do anything better than anyone, except for about 5 songs off of three cd's, they fucking blow. Kudos for mentioning FAtA, that song is fucking awesome, all nine minutes of it.

I have to admit I am an old fart when it comes to metal... I am now 32 and listening to metal for the last 22 years... For the most part of those years, I was always seeking for new bands, whatever style, whatever the signer, just seeking for something fresh... This band is according to me a really promising young band. They might pull off a lot of readers of this site because of the "emo" tag they wear, but hey, WHATEVER... They are good.... Not stellar, but a real pleasant listen! But maybe metalheads are not just ready for this and instead prefer another Cannibal Corpse or Manowar album???

When it was announced that these guys had been added to the UK Download festival bill, the forums went crazy with people slagging them off as 'shitty emo', without even hearing them. I actually asked what they sounded like, and the closest to an actual reply I got was someone posting a picture of the band. So, I went to their Myspace to check them out for myself. Erik is fucking dead-on with this review, and the hypocrisy/sheer retardness of people bagging on the singer's vocals but seeing no problem with Dragonforce, or saying that there's no difference between these guys and Aiden, is evidence that the average metal fan is far more interested in appearing 'br00tal, kvlt and tr00' than actually listening to good music.

It's a weird album to listen to. I really can't make up my mind whether I love it or hate it. It's almost like a guilty pleasure, like listening to Thursday, then grabbing Benighted or Disgorge to purge yourself afterwards.

I mean comon... that's powermetal gay voice at its finest (though it's still not the worst... and I still like dragonforce).

Great review Erik... Most metalheads pretend to be "on the edge" or open-minded... by reading the lashes I find weird that most of those guys did not even take time to listen to this album.... I agree that for most "metalheads" the vocals might be a bit of a turn off... But damn, the guitars totally shred... I'll be looking forward to hear more from this band... Cheers!

Erik: The detractors quickly scanned the review and saw the words "emocore" and "like Decapitated" and rushed to judgement. You gotta have known this was coming. How many people actually read the whole review before posting? This could have been avoided with a more suitable band comparison...

Listen up folks-nowhere in my review do I compare PTH to Decapitated, I merely mention that they, like Decapitated are extemely talanted at a young age and they started there band at 14. "Emo's version of decapitated" is a like differnt to "PTH sound like Decapitated"-that would be a comparison. Come on people-please actively read to review before posting moronic things that dont apply. To think I would compare this band directly to a great polish death metal band shows how ignorant some of you truly are. Thank you.

i went to this band's myspace and listened...sorry to say this shit is NOT really that technical, anyone who plays guitar should know that a few hammer ons, some harmonies, a sweep here and there, and some squeals takes about two years of playing. oh and the singing is probably some of the most stagnant, over corrected shit i've ever heard. too bad pro tools makes these kids sound better than they really are, not their talent. and comparing this band to decapitated is just rude

Great band, great guys. The production on this album blows though, seriously. The basslines are some of the more impressive I've heard but it's a struggle to hear them. Oh well, this band is lyrically above basically any other band in their age bracket. Can't wait to hear what they put out next, and from what they listen to (I talk to them from time to time), I'd expect more insanity the next time around.
