Album Review

Score 10

From the moment the ominous opening tones of the Operation Crossbow movie sample and epic solo kicked in to start “At First Light”, I got goose bumps. This is after all, Bolt Thrower’s first studio album in four years and marks the return of original front man and the voice of Bolt Thrower, Karl Willets after a one-album hiatus for the respectable but not quite classic Honour, Valour, Pride.

So here it is, album number eight, and what were you expecting? Flutes? An Accordion? Female vocals? This is quite simply a Bolt Thrower album, and to be honest, one of their better ones, which to most Bolt Thrower fans means is on par with ..For Victory, Warmaster and Realm of Chaos. What it also means is that it is no deviation whatsoever from the last 6 Bolt Thrower albums in that it’s simplistic, rumbling, Panzer paced, war themed death metal with no frills. But in an era where speed and technicality has become the be all of the genre, Bolt Thrower’s brutal simplicity is akin to having 22 ounce rib eye after 3 weeks of eating nothing but haute cuisine.

Even though they never ‘went away’, the return of Willets does give the album a certain ‘comeback’ feel that permeates the entire album. The tracks seem to lumber with a more purposeful yet somber tone, much like ..For Victory, maybe due to the real world conflict theme. ..For Victory tackled the Falklands conflict and Those Once Loyal addresses inarguably the greatest and stupidest war ever, World War I.

Those Once Loyal is chock full of everything you’d expect; massive grooves, thick, punishing riffage and a reserved sense of brutality that lurches and stomps with the weight and devastation of a 155mm Howitzer shell. Tracks like “The Kill Chain” (with its now familiar “World Eater”, “Cenotaph”, “Embers” and “Powder Burns” riff), the punishing groove of “Granite Wall” and “Anti-Tank (Dead Armor)” lope with tangible, air displacing heaviness. There are also some muted harmonies and, gasp, solos as the title track (very reminiscent of …For Victory’s superb title track), “Last Stand of Humanity”, the massive “Salvo”, and the stunningly somber closure of “When Cannons Fade” (my personal favorite from this album), which show Bolt Thrower is subtly more than just Shock and Awe.

The Andy Faulkner (Honour, Valour, Pride) production is what you’d expect from these Brit Bruisers; smooth but punishing and like a Challenger Mk II tank bearing down on you; threateningly heavy.

An album like Those Once Loyal or any Bolt Thrower album for that matter should need my stamp of approval as it comes with an innate recommendation due to Bolt Thrower’s well deserved ‘legend’ status. I tried not to be all fanboy and gush about Those Once Loyal like a noobie reviewer listening to Bolt Thrower for the first time or a grizzled vet blinkered by favoritism, but the truth of the matter is this album is deserving of the above score. Bolt Thrower are one of the few bands that despite their lack of progression and flair, always deliver the goods. And Those Once Loyal is no exception as it will leave you with powder burns and shellshock.

Tis a goodin'. I enjoy listening to this album. Nearly every song is listenable, and not to mention, groovable. Standouts (even though most would say they can't tell the difference between Bolt Thrower songs-something I can partially agree with.) include At First Light, Those Once Loyal, Killchain, Anti-Tank, and Cannons fade. Great cd...

Bolt Thrower is one of the Best Metal/death bands i've heard of yet!!!! I have to admit that i have not listened to Those Once Loyal as of yet, but am looking forward to hearing their newest album. I've listened to all albums up till now, and can feel at home when i do listen to Cenotaph, and am enspired to go to War myself on the world, or at least agianst Fairbanks Alaska. Warmaster also puts me in that mood, the whole album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I'm as big of a Bolt Thrower fan as they come, but calling Nile and Corpse "boring"? I don't know, to each their own I guess. "Cast down the Heretic" flays my fucking flesh. Anyway if you haven't heard it then you need to check out IVth Crusade...I still get chills listening to that and I bought it way back in '93, when Thrower first released it. Good shit.

First Bolt Thrower album I ever heard (and bought soon afterwards) and my favourite, together with ...For Victory. It's definately worth the 6/6/6, although they've never changed their sound a lot. Why does it deserve a 6 for songwriting? because there's no band in the whole world that can capture the thunderous riffs and groove of Bolt Thrower. It's a bit like pre-Slaughter of the Soul At The Gates: there's been many copycats but no band can ever reach the complexity and genius of The Red In The Sky Is Ours. In my opinion, bolt thrower is by far the best brutal death metal band out there and are far beyond highly overrated (and boring) acts like Nile and Cannibal Corpse.

After repeated listens to this album, I would say that this album is not close to a 6.6.6. Production is good, songwriting and musicianship I would give a 3. Im bored of this album and by Bolt Thrower. I liked Honor Valor Pride more, and even that bored me a little. If I want Bolt Thrower I will listen to anything before For Victory.

I agree with Mr. Shreds of Sanity - Where are the blast beats. My first BT album was Realm of Chaos, and that album blows this out of the water. In fact, I can not understand how this album is a 6/6/6. Why does the songwriting get a 6 ? Its the same formula they've always used, and its far from perfect. I like Bolt Thrower, but they havent expanded on their sound in about 10 years or so. Im not looking for drastic changes, just SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT ! Live, they never play more than 1 or 2 songs from their earlier albums. Why ? If they played Eternal War or Afterlife, Im sure it would be a highlight, but instead they play boring songs like Silent Demise. Those Once Loyal is not a bad album, but its no 6/6/6

Look this band is generally an anticipated band. They are offering simple total brutal death metal. But they have something that no other band has. The war atmosphere. The riffs and melodies are perfect. Drums are brutal and simple just like the vocals. I love this band anyway. O and something else. Its definitely not easy for a band to produce top albums after many years. But Bolt Thrower did it

Lee; you haven't truly heard Bolt Thrower, in my opinion, until you've properly absorbed Realm of Chaos, and perferably Mercenary. They best reflect the two different sounds Bolt Thrower have mastered in their long career.

NO BLAST BEATS !!! WHY NO BLAST BEATS ?!?!?!? Why must BT release the same album over and over. I liked their last few albums, but, like Obituary, this new album offers nothing new. As for "The Kill Chain"; it just seems like a rip off those older songs, and it does not have the same effect as World Eater. I still enjoy Bolt Thrower, but why would I listen to Those Once Loyal or ... For Victory (which bores me) when I'd much rather hear anything from In Battle... or The Peel Sessions through The IVth Crusade.

full disclosure: i've liked every bolt thrower album i've ever heard. there's just something about the keen focus and exacting precision -- in short, BT's unrelenting commmitment to the galloping downtuned riff -- that appeals to me. compared to the hyperkinetic approach of the extreme metal set there is obviously very little going on on a BT record, but i like the reviewer's analogy: sometimes simplicity is just what the doctor ordered. and this record does it for me like no BT record since 'the ivth crusade' has, and it undoubtedly will rank among my most listened to albums of the year.

Can't wait to hear this disc; i've been waiting for a new BT album for too long. Shame I won't be able to afford it for a while. That was a great review; very promising. It sounds like you sure know your Bolt Thrower, (although the best albums in my opinion are undoubtedly Realm of Chaos and Mercenary) and it restores my faith and hopes for Those Once Loyal. I heard the track they released (from someone else's Terrorizer disc this month) and to be honest it was boring as hell, even though i'm a huge BT fan. Just as well you didn't mention it in your review, which leads me to believe it must be one of the few, if not the only filler track. Yay.

I might listen to this for about fifteen minutes before I lose all interest whatsoever. I have about five Bolt Thrower songs on my computer and I think I listen to them about once a year, and that's all I can stand. It's not that they're a bad band, but their music seems to get so old so fast, that I rarely ever feel like listening to them.
