Chris Sessions

The band's name immediately makes you think of another Misfit-core act, obviously, but the music is nothing of the kind. Instead we seem to have an unholy union of Cephalic Carnage and Impaled, which is not a bad thing, but it's not exactly groundbreaking, either.

The CC reference comes in the form of some interesting rhythmic decisions - not however, from the utterly mindbending style and tempo changeups CC employs - and are the record's saving grace. What could have been a simple splattergrind record gets a boogie push that keeps it from becoming simply disposable. At least three times in this five song (and one horror sound collage) I found my hand tapping out a rhythm as I worked. You gotta figure at this point I am almost inured to most metal rhythms, so that's a nifty trick. Apart form this, the band hovers closely to the tried and true splatterdeath method of fun before pomp Carcass worship.

The musicianship is par, with nothing particularly jumping out at you besides a swell little bass run at the beginning of the song "Float". But there are no glaring flaws in the playing. The production is adequate for the band's style. You get used to Exhumed/Impaled sounding stuff so this seems slightly pedestrian, but honestly it's just nitpicking. It's heavy and it conveys the ferocity and the joy. For a calling card EP it works just fine.

The bottom line is that for an EP of splattergrind this is worth a look, but if this group wants to really make a mark on the scene they should look at stepping up the charisma as far as performance is concerned. In their field are some of the masters of the whole genre, and to be anything other than a cool opening act requires a bit more than I am hearing on this disc. That being said, I think the band has the chops and the creativity to shove their way up there. I look forward to a full length. You should take a click over to their website and see for yourself, but I think this is worth a nod.
